So after reading up a bit on the 5100s they only provide one inch of suspension travel when used for a 3" lift? Doesn't that seem like a tiny amount? If I go with coilovers does my suspension range increase?

travel will be limited mostly by your upper and lower ball joints, and then tie-rods, CV axles, etc.

You can upgrade each component to increase travel. Your travel is only as much as the component that limits it the most.

My main goal is to keep the functionality of my truck on the road as well as giving it some extra room for bigger tires for off the road. What am I giving up by getting the 5100s?

I can see the dollar signs adding up! :crapstorm:

you cant add bigger tires just because of a lift. This is because if you off road, the suspension is going to compress to stock ride height and even more, so what ever tires you cant fit stock, will rub with a lift if suspension is compressed.

If you want bigger tires, cut out some inner fenders and cab mount chop, etc.

If you want superior off road performance, get some coilovers and have them valved perfectly.

So all these people running around with 32-33s and a 3" lift are guaranteed a good "rub down" when offroading? I don't plan on catching any big air like in your pic, so not sure if that makes any difference.

anyone who could not fit a tire at stock ride height and lifts their truck to fit a larger tire, will be guaranteed to rub when the suspension compresses, so yes.

You dont need to huck it to fully bottom out...just hitting a nice sized bump or going into a dip at high speeds will make your suspension compression and cause major rubbage to occur

    yup.. what he said.

I have 285/75 on ICON extended travel and rub all over the place without ever letting my tires leave the ground. Cab mount chop is imperative.

    That's my hope!

What is your budget? I think that is most important in deciding..

A good rule of thumb is; for every inch of suspension you add, you can add an inch of height in tire.. with minimal, if any, rubbing issues.. this does not apply to width, of course..

The Fuelly is accurate.. Its an average and you're absolutely right, my MPG has gone WAY down.. I even calibrated my speedo so its very accurate..

Gears and locker are in my future.. I need to do more research so far I'm thinking either 4.10 or 4.56, not sure yet..

I will see about changing my Fuelly so everyone can see the difference!!
