that must have been a shock/surprise for her.

and OP, I would depending on what kind of driver he is (ie:any tickets, accidents, etc.... and if he would pay for damage if it happened)

i would definitely let my father in law borrow mine. my insurance is up to date, so no worries there. vehicles can be repaired and replaced. not the same with family relationships. plus, my father in law owns two of his own tacomas and loves them. no doubt he would take care of mine. it was built to be used as a truck (aside from the crappy factory leafs) let him show it off.

Good on you sir, not too many people now a days would do that. And you are exactly right, if you are a good person and you have to ask yourself if you need to help out family, then something isn't right and you may need to reassess your "I'm a good person" status.

Now we are throwing around the "good person" bs. So if you don't want to help family out your not a good person? Helping your cheap ass family buy letting them borrow your truck to get shrubs or not can put you in the bad person category? I am not the only person this guys knows with a truck. He doesn't seem to ask them to borrow theirs, because he knows they don't want to do it. This is all so he can save a few dollars, so he doesn't have to pay someone to deliver them, so he doesn't have to buy and drive a capable vehicle. It is not like he is down on his luck, or sick or hurt in any way and I am thinking about weather or not I will help.

Look at the 2011 4.0 engine swap thread. Short story, he let his brother borrow the truck. Said brother parked it in a creek.

It always starts with "shrubs." This will become a habit... trust me. I've been down this road with my own family. Ol' daddy-in-law is el cheapo grande.

In order to maintain piece in your marital bed, you're going to have to let him borrow it, but be forewarned. This won't be the end of it. A couple weeks from now it will be landscaping bricks to go along with his new shrubs--and they'll be scraping up the shit of your new truck bed.

Reverse the situation, if your father in law told you straight out no, what would you think. If he had a truck would you not ask him if you could just use it for a bit to go pick up some freakin shrubs. Why so much drama, just help out your family. Or just go ahead and tell him no, but please do keep us updated, I'd like to see how it turned out for you :)

From you referring to your father in law as "I am not the only person this guys knows with a truck", it doesn't seem like you get along with him and don't like him very much, so don't let him borrow the truck.

    Hell no...

I said yes once just once.. I got the truck back with a scratches on the bed, trash and left over rocks in the bed. And trash in the cab. I was pissed. Didn't say nothin to wify but when they asked to borrow my new Tacoma I said NO. Wife was mad but she got over it.

For me it was about respect of someone else's property. I allow you to use my truck return it the way I gave it to you.

I think that either way OP you're going to come across as a tool to them(Dad & wife) for not letting them(Dad) borrow it, or to yourself if something were to happen.

You could give him the benefit of a doubt. If something were to happen then never again. Just make sure he puts the gas in that he took out. Make sure he cleans out the bed.

I honestly think you're in a losing battle. One way or another someone isn't going to be happy. If I were you I would just hope he doesn't have the mentality like his daughter, "it's just a truck".

I agree. Just like I said before but this really depends on what type of man your father-in-law is OP. If he's like mine, NO. No respect for my house or my property even after we let he and his wife live in our home (for gratis--until we had enough and we kicked them out), therefore he's shit out of luck.

My Dad drove me the almost 4 hours to get my Taco, and the first question he asks on the test drive is " How much is the towing capacity? ". He joked with the salesman about " It's always good to know someone with a truck." He was disappointed when the salesman said 3500 lb. towing..and I have neglected to mention that it has the towing package.

I will add that he has a Trailblazer and pulls stuff with it all the time. If he wanted to use my truck , the deal would be that I go with it and drive it.

jeez there are alot of hard asses on here - i love my truck but fuck! you guys are rediculous. what do you think your family is never going to bring the truck back? its a fucking automobile, insurance was created for a reason. if he ruins it, you get a new truck, if he doesnt ruin it he will think your truck is amazing just like you do. its not a huge deal, let the fucking guy use it!!!!

My brother, yes. My sisters, yes. Even my wife's best friend, yes. My father-in-law, hell no. At least in my case, my father-in-law is a "user," and not to be trusted or respected. That's why I asked the OP what type of man his father-in-law is? Seems to me that if the OP has the slightest bit of hesitation, he already knows the answer. Not all family are to be treated equally, or trusted in my mind.

... ^^^ ... I love my wife but she never drives my truck ... because she has already beat the chit out of her 2011 Honda.

She even had a door ripped off when she opened it in traffic ... ... and (when shopping) she parks very close to the store in the smallest parking space available ...

She needs something from Home Depot or whatever ... I offer her my chauffeur services ... :D

What? Are we living in the the 12th century or something? Let you? Was she underage? Man, women's rights sure have taken a step backwards. My wife hasn't spoken to her family in over a year because they are moochers. Screw loyalty based on marriage... has the OP's FIL earned his trust? Is the guy worth a shit?
