Why is the truck being insured a reason to let anyone borrow it? Who wants their truck in the shop for any amount of time may it be a huge accident or a scratch along the side of his truck? It's OP's truck and he has the right to refuse to let anyone borrow it regardless if it's family or friend. Just because the guy is his wife's father doesn't immediately obligate OP to say yes to the guy. That's not being selfish at all. OP is just trying to look out for his investment and his DD. He obviously has an issue with his father in law driving his truck and I'm sure he has his personal reasons considering he's been saying no to the guy for the past 5 years.

I still don't get this whole "it's a truck treat it like a truck" mentality that some have expressed. What does that even mean? So what if it's a truck/car/motorcycle people will treat their vehicles the way they want to. Not everyone bought a truck to off road.

I'm blown away at the sheer number of people unwilling to lend their truck to immediate family. What am I missing here? Not only are they doing you a favor everytime they watch their grandchild (not just their benefit). but these are the people you should be able to turn to when you are in need. No offense, but it's pretty disrepectful across the board. I realize it is YOUR truck. Maybe the next time one of you get in a bind this individual is the one you can turn to and he can say "go fuck yourself"

It would be awesome if dad in law made you eat Christmas dinner on the sidewalk and fork over for your share of the food cause you don't pay for his mortgage or groceries

    Lol

People willing to burn social bridges over things like this, generally have a lower social intelligence (Awareness of situations and the social dynamics that govern them) and they do not go through this thought process without serious reflection.

My Father in Law would tell me no to nothing. Gotta let him use it and hope for the best. Worst thing that happens is he fixes any damage. Gotta keep the family happy.

Well if I were in your shoes and couldn't drive, I'd let him take it but only if I were going with him. And the only reason I would do that is because I wouldn't even have my truck if it weren't for him. He gave our 2003 to my wife before we met, and then after we got married and I wrecked the truck the insurance bought us our 2005!
I do still dislike Any one else driving my truck though... Even my Wife. lol

    exactly my thoughts.

and you'd think others do as well, but most of the time that's not the case. That's why when people ask if they can they borrow my truck i always respond with "Can you drive a stick?" 99% of the time the response is "damn... no"

I bought my truck less than a week ago, and my father in law already asked to use it!

That being said, I would let him any day. He treats his things very well, so if anything happened I know he would make it right.

On a side note, I have a BROTHER in law, that I would NOT let use it. He beats the shit out of everything.

Didn't read through the whole thread, but this made me laugh. +1.

Anyway OP, for me, NO. My Father in law wouldn't even ask to drive my truck, what he would ask is if I can pick things up for him, but he would never ask me to borrow it.

Hell no. ... Hell hell no

My dad showed up last week with his bumper duct taped to his car. I asked him what had happened and he said, " I hit something in the road the other day. I'm pretty sure it wasnt a person. "
