Coolant Flush ?'s

I just got my new truck and I am planning on giving it a coolant flush and putting some new coolant in it just to get everything new and straightened up and I heard that I needed to use a toyota specific coolant and I was just double checking with you guys to see exactly what I needed and how much coolant to do the flush and refill. thanks for the help

 

It took me a little over 2 gallons for my 2.7L...and if you dont live where it freezes you can just top off the system with distilled water, thats what I did.

 

Where is the best place to go about getting this coolant? Any auto parts store will have it?

Seriously, for the difference in price, I buy the non-diluted and dilute it myself with distilled water.
A gallon of coolant and a gallon of distilled water is a bit cheaper than 2 gallons of 50/50.

 

Pink? SLLC?

Ive always used the red long life. I thought pink was for the new gen Toyotas.

 

I got the red non mixed coolant at the dealership for $23 a gallon.

 

I used regular 50/50 prestone long life coolant. As long as it doesn't have a certain ingredient in it you can use it in a toyota (cant remember what exactly but the stuff I bought was toyota compatible)...and as long as you flush out any existing red coolant.

I have used prestone green for years without a problem.

Most important thing is to do a good flush with distilled water, and make sure you drain the block and the rad.

 

So I should run distiller water through then drain it and then run some more water then drain and then fill with the Toyota compatible coolant? Is there a special way to drain the block or just pull the hose from the block and let it run ? I have not done a coolant flush before so any help is great

 

There is a plug on the block to drain it...and the petcock on the bottom of the rad to drain it. (not sure where the plug is on the block of the 3.4)

Just drain the block and the rad. Re-seal everything up. Fill up with distilled water, run the truck for a while with the heater on high to flush the heater core well, drain, refill with coolant.

Just looked it up...it has to be "silicate" free.

The prestone extended life green in silicate free. Says so on the jug...so I use it. No problems

 

I usually take a foot of 1/4" fuel line and attach it to the drain. This helps guide the coolant into your drain pan with little splash.

 

Alrighty thanks! So I can use any of the 50/50s or get the undiluted and dilute it myself and save some money? Also does anyone have a diagram of where the block drain bolt is?

Ive never personally drained the block since I ran cleaner and distilled through the system. Maybe I will next time. Theres also a couple other good tips on there... Don't loosen the drain valve too much or the fluid will spray out. Also, clean out the reservoir while youre at it. Just remove the battery strap and the resi will pop out.

 

First gens call for red. I got mine at the dealership and it came undiluted.

 

I need to replace my water pump (or at least the gaskets) and will drain/flush the system as y'all have stated. Where can I turn in my old radiator fluid?

 

Some... I repeat... Some areas allow flushing down through the septic system. Look into your local laws and regulations.

Also, some auto shops will take your coolant for free.

I just store oil and coolant until I have 10-15 gallons and take it to my local hazardous waste events. You can find a list on your county website.
