If I had a 2012, it would be really hard to hand it over to someone else for a utility run. Those first few dings/scratches on a new vehicle are painful. After a vehicle has some "character" it would be a lot easier but only you know how much it would bug you if it came back scratched. I think it depends a lot on the person that is borrowing it and how responsible they are.

I use my truck as a truck and it's frequently dirty from picking up loads of landscaping stuff but I would still be the one driving and loading. I'd drive someone 100 miles to pick something up before I'd lend it to them.

At the very least, give them the "weak tailgate warning" so you don't get a truck back with a tailgate bent in the middle. Give them a tarp to protect the bottom of the bed so it doesn't get scratched up.

If my girls dad asked to borrow my truck I would probably let him, however he owns an 06 TRD OR AC 4x4... so I would be eternally perplexed as to why he needed a shorter bed...

Save for him, my girl and several very close friends that frequently let me use there vehicles however, not a chance in hell.

I said it above but let me make myself clear: Unfortunately, in my experience, the fact a father-in-law happens to have provided some biological fluid to help produce my wife does NOT make him trustworthy--and it doesn't make him a real father. A man has to earn my trust--any man--and, again in my experience, he is a man neither to be trusted nor respected.

My wife has a had a strained relationship with her father her whole life. She has a sister, whom he and his wife now live with, but also three step-siblings from his previous marriage she has never met. He has not provided an ounce of support for them since they were very young--and he has admitted as much to me as if he was proud of the fact--no kidding. That, in my opinion, is definition of a dirtbag.

The fact this man is my father-in-law is simply that, a fact, and not a relationship I am required to honor as if I owe him some foregone allegiance. On top of it, he uses people to his sole benefit at every turn--especially his wife and children. I despise him, and he knows it. I wish I had a FIL that I could trust and respect. If that was the case, borrowing my truck would be done without hesitation. I envy you guys who are blessed enough to have an FIL you respect, but not all of us are that fortunate.

The question remains, does the OP (since he brought this question to us) have a trusting and respectful relationship with his FIL?

Since all my friend's are college student age..hell to the no! They never had a good enough reason to drive it anyways! I inherited my mom's old car before I got the taco..My mom got it in several accidents and dinged it up to hell on curbs and anonymous posts/signs. My dad would be the only one I would let drive it right now, but he hasn't asked to try lol..since he drove the 94 toya pickup that inspired me :D

Absolutely, but I drive and do the loading, securing, and unloading of all materials. He can ride along if he wants, but that's as far as the borrowing goes!

    What a train wreck.

Sounds like you've already made up your mind, and you already know what you're going to do.

"This guy" and "cheap ass family" - you clearly don't like him very much.

I guess the only question that remains is how you want to be perceived. Pick an option:

    1. Irrational about your truck. NOBODY drives or touches my truck but me. "Hey you kids! get off my lawn!"

Or Door number 2. Irrational about your father in law. "This guy" is a "cheap ass family." Sorry Honey.

Or 3. Fuck 'em. Who cares what they think?

You'll probably have the most success maintaining a further relationship with your inlaws if you pick 1. But hey, if you want them out of your life altogether - jump straight to 3.

u said u wouln't be able to drive or lift, why don't you go with your wife and your father in law, let one of them drive (spend some fun time with both of them) and ask the workers at bj's to load it for you guys, that way it's still under your supervision, and you're not risking injury. It is of course your right to say no if you want, but it's something very hard to do if you're on good terms with him.

he is family. why would you let a material object get in the way of helping family. it is just a truck and a bmw is just a bmw. they are both things that can be fixed and replaced.

they watch your daughter because they want to help. you should let your father in law borrow your truck because you want to help.

kind of crazy that you never learned to share.

Well this has been an interesting discussion. I knew I would get a lot of thoughts here. Thanks and I will make the right decision when I need to. FYI, I made up my mind before I even started the thread.
