ya, I like local shops. There are 2 in Blacksburg that I like, I like one a lot more than the other, but it isn't a specialized dealer like the other one is, and since I like specialized a lot, I'll keep buying specialized.

and those cranks look nice, I managed to find them on sale for 130 somewhere, only problem, I don't know about fit and all....or tooth count. I dont use the smallest crank all that much, but the larger 2 I use a lot.

Oh, and I will probably end up just upgrading every component on the bike sooner or later as one wears out, rather than buying anew bike. Because I love this bike lol. when I do buy a new on, I will build it myself. probably some hardtail and then load it.

oh, I forgot. I will probably need a new set of cranks sooner or later lol, I'm about half way through the metal on ends of the cranks from cutting turns hard on concrete lol

Generally the idea is to have the pedal up on the side your turning towards or at least have them level to the ground. It's not just a crank/pedal saving thing, it'll also keep you from crashing and busting ass and breaking other shit. I was gonna suggest just getting new chainrings for the cranks you have but if they are fucked up that way too then yeah, go for a new crankset and if you really want to spend the extra money on it like it seems your trying to then buy the cranks from the local shop and then buy the chainrings seperately from them. They will love you for it. Don't buy the whole crankset online and fix it yourself, that'd just be wrong. :D Hope you ride with a helment.

    Yeah.
Most 9spd 3-ring cranks have the same or similar enough tooth count on the 3 rings, and it is cheaper just to buy the cranks and rings together with a new bottom bracket. With a threaded bottom bracket, most of the standard brands will work, but there are a few tools you might need -- may be cheaper just to pay the local shop to install them. And have them adjust the drivetrain at the same time.

You would proabably want a new rear cassette and chain as well. Chains don't really stretch, but they do get slightly longer due to wear on the rollers. This then starts wearing your chainrings and cassette to match. A new chain alone may skip teeth because it doesn't fit the rings. Changing the cranks and front rings alone is probably fine, but if your chain breaks and you get a new one, you may need a new cassette as well to avoid the skipping.

college in a mountainous regions (Blacksburg, va) has enough hills with that I can tear up the bike lol

Ride 3 classes a day every day, with my weight (not light) plus a backpack that is somewhere near 40 lbs

For something like chain rings Iay or may not do it myself, I'm more worried about getting things that fit

I'm liable to order to wrong thing

I have change my riding style recently after a good crash and seeing my cranks messed up from scraping

My pedals are the same way so probably new there too

Brakes are after the cranks, I wear through them fast lol

I know I will deal with brakes with a shop and not on my own, the cranks I may do myself

    Either way though lol
