Wanting to regear in the future and might as well put a locker in.

If you "gas it in a turn" on wet pavement there's no system in the world that can compensate for your stupidity....locker, LSD, ATRAC...nothing

Z power of Quattro does pretty well in the wet...oh wait...wrong brand.

I'm fine with the way the Auburn works in the wet. And to be truthful, I've had more "oh shit" moments with VSC than the posi rear end. Which is to say the VSC kicks in a lot and the rear end has been just fine (except when it won't lock and I want it to lock--but that's the price for LSD).

i have an auto locker and i dont have any problems with it. Just have to let off the gas around turns. Every now and then i have to pop it in reverse for a second to release the built up torque is all. I love it.

yeah i dont really see your point, unless every uphill turn you just like to floor it for no apparent reason! I think you are thinking way too hard about this. 90% of the time, the way your vehicle handles on the road depends on how u drive it. The other 10% are dependent on the type of vehicle, weather elements, road condition, other drivers, things out of your control, etc. . . . .

If you are basing your "theory of wet turns and locker" on your decision to get one or not, i think you should consider doing a little more research on specifically what different kinds of lockers, LSDs, ATRAC systems, etc. do for the on road and off road handling of your truck. And just to remind you (unless you've changed your mind) you are looking for something that will work well off road while maintaining on road driveability.

I was just under the impression that with any pressure applied it would be locked and easy to slip on wet pavement. but it sounds like with normal driving habits it should be just fine?

That's the idea with the no-slip. It's got some springs in there to help manage the locking. Not only that, locked or unlocked, you're only going to spin if you've got significant power applied and are turning sharply.

Here's a question I recall coming up but couldn't recall if an answer ever materialized....

No-Slip unit in the rear and in the FRONT...would that be a problem? Here's what I'm getting at. The rear diff ALWAYS has power going to it so it would affect daily driving as power is applied to it. However, during daily driving when 4WD is NOT engaged there is no torque applied to the No-Slip unit and the diff isn't even engaged to the transfer case. So my thought is that you could have one of these No-Slip lockers in the front and not affect daily driving at all.

What say ye? Can we get a locker guru in here?

Bump to the front page....really curious about this. Seems to be a good idea.

True. A front locker of any type (even welded spider gears) has no ill effect when in 2wd. The ADD disconnects the passenger side axle and the t-case stops applying power to the front driveline in 2wd. I have an arb and a manual shift t-case so my ADD is always engaged, even in 2wd, and I haven't had any issues at all. The problem with your theory is that nobody makes a no slip for the front end. ARB on the other hand, makes a fine locker that is always there when you need it and drives normal when you don't.

I'll be honest, I don't know anything about the sizing for diffs. As I understand it, the No-Slip (and other diffs) come in different sizes and or variations. Do you not think there is one that will work?

Or I suppose the more proper question would be; what specifications do I need to look for to get something that's compatible up front?

    What about the front?

And the number "8.4" what does that represent? A gear ratio or an overall size of the components or something? Really I'm clueless here.

Lockers are built for specific applications. If it is not spec'd for your diff, then it won't work. There are many reasons why. The "8.4" designation is mostly a model number. It is the non Elocker differential. Both the locker version and the non locker versions use 8" ring gears. There is no 8.4" ring in these trucks, but the "8.4" is a stronger design.

The reason you shouldn't put any fulltime locker in the front is that you lose the ability to use 4wd on ice or other low traction road surfaces. A locked front in such circumstances is very dangerous. Locked fronts should only be considered in dedicated offroad vehicles. I would not use anything but an ARB in any 4x4 front diff.

Yeah I can see how it would be dangerous on ice. And thanks for the explanation.

Would an OEM LSD from the rear of one of the earlier Sport models work up front?

So 4.10 gears from a 4cyl Tacoma should work with both a TRD Sport and TRD Off Road?

I asked the question but didn't see an answer thrown out. What size is the FRONT differential on the 2nd Gen Tacoma Sport?
