i currently have a rear differential with a 3.727 gear ratio and im running 33 inch mud grapplers. what would change if i regeared to a 4.56 gear ratio and kept my 33 inch tires?

well my MPGs were bad i guess because of the tires but how much of a dive do you think it would take on the highway? i figured it would kind of even it out with the new ratio and make it closer to stock MPGs am i wrong or right?

You can expect to see 24-2500 RPM while at 65-70mph.. This results in shitty mpgs

There is something very wrong if your truck is that high in the RPM range with those tires on stock gears. Mine is at 2100 RPMs at 70mph.

If anything you should go to 4.10 gears. Those will bring you closest to stock range/power with 33's.

same thing i said but ive searched everywhere and cant find that gear ratio for my truck or that will fit in my housing, the stock gears will cost me more than the 4.56 gears because they are an oem part or so i was told and when i asked about the 4.10 gears they said they didnt offer that option i dont get it i just dont. ill see what happens if nothing else ill trade my gas hog for a new generation taco :)

4.11 are available to buy anywhere. 4.10 are as you said, OEM gears by Toyota. A junk yard 4 banger will have them. You're lucky that you're a Prerunner as you only need one diff worth of them.

This site has really poor info on re-gearing that keeps being re-stated over and over again. The reason mileage suffers when you do not lower your gears after a tire size increase is that (in addition to the new rotating mass/weight) your engine is laboring and not operating at it's peak torque curve as it was designed to do. 4.56 gears will not make your make your mpg's dive as stated above and are almost as ideal as the 4.11's depending on the size of the 33"s some are closer to 32" and some are closer to 34", depending on wheel size, and manufacturer. The trick here if you are concerned about mpg is to find out at what RPM the peak of your toqure curve is when you are driving at highway speeds/gear and operate the vehicle at that speed. You could very well get better mileage with 4.56's. I doubt that most of the people here have ran a Taco of your year with both 4.11's and 4.56 at the exact same tire height as yours and with your driving habits. Sorry if it sounds like I'm flaming anyone here (not my intention) but do a quick search and it's the same nonsense being repeated over and over by people with no knowledge of gear setups.

Is your truck shifting into overdrive? Sometimes larger tires will have this effect/affect (I never get that right)

Not always. With a lift, and large tires, not only adding more rotational mass (tires), you are increasing the frontal area of the truck. Going up in gears to a 4.10, or 4.56 , in some cases, return lost hwy mpg, as the engine is doing less work to move the vehicle at the same speeds.

Gearing will also help town MPG, so depending on what the OP drives most, he could come out ahead.

Assuming these 33s are actually 33 and not 29s??? with 4.10 gears the rpm would be up 3%, and with 4.56 gears the rpm will be up 14% from stock.
