My Titus X. I got this after my lower back and ass got too sore riding my hardtail Litespeed Pisgah. This thing is a dream to ride, and I had it professionally built (unlike my other bikes) so I've barely had to do any tweaking to make it perfect.

Hey everyone, I've been on this site for a while but just signed up for it today. Kind of weird asking a bike question but you guys all seem to know a lot about bikes. But heres my question I've seen this bike used for sale online. Is it a good bike? What should I look for if i go see it in person? Heres the description:

2002 15" Specialized Stumpjumper FSRxc Comp Mountain Bike
good condition. single owner and well kept
    panaracer firexc pro 26" tires
    fox racing rear shock
    manitou sx front fork
    shimano xtr rear derailleur

    thanks for the help

I think you're on the right track. Some of this, a bit of that and a real start and end. You did well for your first time.

15" frame is either a small or XS iirc. How tall are you? I'm 5'11" and I ride a 18" or a 19" bike

    How much?

A couple concerns - its a 10 year old bike. The shock and fork are going to need rebuilding, if not replaced (figure ~$50-100 each, if they can even find parts to rebuild any more).

On the plus side, you get 9spd, so finding replacement drivetrain parts are relatively easy.

You would need to consider that needing replaced. If the guy took care of it, it may not need anything, but a new cassette will run $30 +, chainrings will run $50+, and a chain an additional $20+.

Then there are things that you may need to alter fit (even if the frame fits you), like stem/bars/grips/saddle.

This is personal, but I have left the stock saddle on 1 bike in the past 5 years, and have changed bars and stem on all but one bike as well.

If you can ride it, and it all fits and the drive-train and fork are running perfectly, its probably a $250-300 bike, at best.

If other items are upgraded, like the wheels or crankset, it would be different... The XTR derailleur is nice, but its about the only thing (other than the frame) that has any resell value. Example here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Specialized...7616743?pt=Mountain_Bikes&hash=item3f16551e67

Thanks for the help. I'm about 5'8 so what size frame should I look for? I haven't rode a bike since I was a kid so I don't know much about them.

    probably around a 17"

if you have a local bike shop (non wal mart, big box store) go try out a few bikes and see what size feels good to you.

    ^ What he said.
I'm 5'7" on a good day with a 31" inseam and currently riding an 18. My old 17 felt a little better as far as shifting my weight for and aft, but the 18 works.

Keep in mind that bikes are measured in "S, M, L, and XL" for some builders. Inches for others and cm for still others. And even though you might find two frames from different builders, they may not fit the same.

So important to hit a reliable shop and find the bike that fits best.
