If it was the mother in law that asked I probably would say yes without thinking. She is the one thats watches my daughter. My wife and I agree that our daughter is not allowed alone with the father in law because he cant be trusted and does whatever he thinks is right even if it would be in direct opposition to what anyone else would want.

I very rarely lend out my truck to anyone either like most of y'all, and rarely let anyone drive it even if I'm in it. However, I have come to realize this is my own obsession and it is just a vehicle, well insured. Let him borrow it if you respect him, if not prepare for the :crapstorm:

Haven't read the whole thread but replying to OP: How prissy is your truck? Mine had rock chips in the paint and scratches from a close encounter with a fence 2 weeks after I bought it. Also, it's a truck. If you're doing it right it's going to look like its been driven, so why get in a twist about door dings? It could be damaged sitting away from all other vehicles, and door dings easy to touch up anyway. Ask him to please park out in the lot away from traffic since it's new and you don't want to mess up the paint. Hopefully he has enough respect for you that he will. If he doesn't and there's damage then consult your wife about whether you or she should bring it up, since it's her family.

Families are a package deal, you didn't just marry your wife. So why alienate her family over that? Obviously we like our trucks but they're still just STUFF. This isn't your daughter's life or wellbeing you are worried about in this scenario. It's a truck, that's all.

    I'll chime in on this...

about a year ago, I had a young lady from our church want to borrow my truck to help her move.

    I denied the request.

In this particular case, it wasn't so much about the truck as it was about me helping her move.

and here is why I said no...

she didn't ask me directly, she put the preacher up for it ( I thought that was wrong)

she also had a boyfriend with an F-150...who not only wasn't gonna help her move...he wasn't going to lend his truck for the cause.

I told the preacher it wasn't about the truck, it was principle. As I do not do the "help a friend move" gig anymore. BTDT.

In the end I did offer cash to start a collection to help the young lady move. It's what I do anymore if someone asks me to help them move. I'd rather part with some cash, than suffer a few days of back pain (my back is kinda wore out from a lifetime in construction)

Everybody send the op 1 dollar. He will then rent a truck from home depot for 2 hours. Problem solved. Thank you for your support.

Nothing about being a selfish asshole about it.

I would expect him to do the same thing that I used to do when I didn't own a truck, or when I needed to haul something that my truck was incapable of hauling....

    I rented a U-Haul pickup or trailer.
I've never borrowed a vehicle, and am frankly not comfortable driving someone else's vehicle.

Likewise, I am not comfortable letting anyone else drive my vehicles.
Yes, they are insured. No, that insurance isn't going to compensate me for the pain in the ass hassle and time lost from work that follows an accident.

Missing My Last Tacoma --- Had 11 Toyota trucks in the past and many other Toyota cars too.
    .
I was thinking about this thread and remembered something that happened about 10 years ago

It was about 2000 and I had a new F-250 and my neighbor needed it for 2 hours to pickup some boxes at an medical expo downtown. Harmless, I thought, right ?? She is a doctor and I assumed that she would take care of it if any problems came up.

She then loaned it to an employee to pickup the boxes at the downtown medical expo convention on a Sunday afternoon. When that employee was leaving the expo (with his laptop) and going back to the truck, a robber approached him and demanded his laptop. He threw the laptop in the truck and locked the door. The robber hit the side window several times with a something hard and that window shattered into very small pieces and glass dust (never have seen a window break like this, ever). I mean very small pieces of glass and glass dust.

Long story short ... the new truck was returned to me ... with a broken window, dented door post, glass dust everywhere inside, .... EVERYWHERE. ..... GLASS DUST EVERYWHERE .... I could not even turn on the blower due to glass dust blowing in my face and lungs.

The employee said it was the doc's responsibility, the doc turned it in on her insurance and they refused to pay and I was left with the mess.

I was basically fu*ked ... the employee quit ... the doc said I loaned the truck to the employee and not her ... so I traded the truck into and lost over $6,000..

Took it to Ford and they said it would be impossible to get all glass dust out and when you turned on the vents in the sunshine, you could see little diamonds (glass) in the air.

Looking back at various favors that I have done for others (including hauling stuff) ... most of the time, it was because they were to damn cheap to do (whatever) on their own.

This is not the only time I have been fu*ked ... helping others either with a car or truck ... so I don't do "vehicles" with others now.

    Like Rich91710 ... when I need a larger truck, trailer, or whatever ... I don't borrow one ... I rent one.
    .
PS ... About 15 years ago, the homeowner's association would not allow me to park my truck outside my garage (even in my driveway) ... but many of the neighbors still wanted to borrow it or wanted me to haul stuff for them ... adding insult to injury. ...

With coworkers and friends I understand that. With family... I dunno. With my family that wouldn't be a problem, if someone borrowed my truck any damage would be fixed and I'd probably even be provided a vehicle if it had to be in the shop. But sounds like OP doesn't trust FIL to do that. Chances are it would be ok, but what if it's not, ya know?

    I can agree here.
