So far I've added an Advance folding bed cover and since removed it. Gave it to my son in Maine, he has an 05 2wd. GT perfect fit seat covers. Weathertech floor mats and window vent visors. Waag center brush/grill guard. Hose clamp tailgate mod. Turned off the seat belt chime. Added Ultra-Gauge. Trailer hitch. Softopper. Replaced sun visors with slide out style. Toyota bed extender. Had Firestone Destinations and now Michelin LTX AT2 in stock size. More mods to come; Fog lights, locking storage in bed, intermittent wipers. Now looking for Radio/HU upgrade. and maybe a lift way down the road.
Was offered without negotiation by dealer. They wanted to sell the trucks and they did.

I figure shoulda, coulda, woulda, if I didn't so it. a DIY oil change is cheap insurance for engine longevity. I'll post up my findings.

I think that lifetime warranty is not a factory warranty, but a dealer or third party service.

I will be doing my first change at 1500 even though I have 3 years of included maint, at the 5K interval. I have done similar with my boats, ATV, and other vehicles. 500 or even 1000 is way too soon, why? because they put additives and other 'break in' chemicals in your first round of oil so changing it at a mere 500 miles could cause more harm than good. Keep in mind Toy is only on the hook for 36K miles, I assume you will want it much longer than that.....

I also would be interested in reading the language of the lifetime engine & tranny warranty, just out of curiosity.

Forgot to mention, that I did the first oil change at 5K miles and the rest are every 6 months. I don't drive more than 10K miles a year.

:) When you got 12, didn't the dealer tell you about the Toyota care plan that comes with 12's ? I got mine back in March and Toyota does all the servicing for the first 2 years.
There is no need to change oil early. On Honda seems to be the only manufactor that installs a break-in oil. The oil in the engine is the normal oil for your taco. It is a synthetic oil, 0W20 that is expensive from most sources that I have checked.
It is your truck and you should do what you fell comfortable with. The ideas of maintaining things that use knowledge from the old days, can be expensive to follow and may be unnecessary with today's technology.

As far as the dealer goes, he is wrong about the 2.7, it gets a old change every 5000 miles or 6 months, according to Toyota.

I did my first oil change at 4,500kms (RAB89 copied me) and I will change my oil every 5,000kms just based on the fact I do not drive that often.

You haven't lived till you take the tour of Soldier Field. A couple of the Bears games are going to be close to us. One at Jacksonville, and one at Tennissee. My wife came from Chicago 31 years ago, and finally eats grits.;)

I am sure now that the Tacoma is still on a 5000 mile change interval with synthetic. It appears to be the only 2012 Model to still use the 5000 mile interval. Look at the bottom of this page for synthetic oil on toyota's site:

    http://www.toyota.com/owners/web/pages/resources/maintenance/synthetic-motor-oil

There is a chart that says all Tacomas have a 5000 mile interval even with synthetic. I wouldnt let your dealer push you around, they get paid for it anyway. You should have recieved a Scheduled maintenance guide in the mail, it will say what the interval is. Mine had 10,000 miles for synthetic but a foot note. The foot note said that the Tacoma was an exception.

Get them to perform the services that you already paid for!

    just checked my 2012 manual:
    V-6 every 5k miles or 6 months wcf, 5w-30
    I-4 every 5k miles or 6 months wcf, 0w-20

Me, I will be using M-1 every 5k miles with an oem filter and will always do it myself.
I also have the "lifetime" powertrain warranty to the original owner which my dealer provides with every car (supposedly costs them $125).
$100 deductible, and it is provided by Fidelity Warranty Service.
Ive heard it may not be worth the paper its written on, and you need to document perfect maintenance records.
Time will tell, but I intend to keep good records and do everything by the book. These trucks dont need much.
Doing the required maintenance religiously is all the insurance any of us should need.

on my 2011 I did the first oil change at 1000 miles. Switched to Amsoil 5w30 and Amsoil EO filter at that time. Second oil change was at 7500 miles and now at 15000 miles. I might stretch it to 10000 miles next time but haven't decided yet.

I did it again. Got tired of paying truck payments and gas and traded in for a 2015 Honda Accord Sport since I enjoyed my 2013 Sport so much.
VW seems to have a special formulation break-in oil too, from what I've gathered at TDIclub.

Either way I say go with what the owners manual suggests. Too many people changing their oil at one hundred miles just cause it "feels" right. Just like people babying their engines when new to "break it in" when it should be run hard every once in a while to help seat the rings.

I'm going to go with the Maintenance Minder in the Honda for oil changes and change when it's at 10-15% oil life remaining. When I had my Tacoma I ended up changing it every 5,000 miles or soon thereafter just to get rid of the "Maint. Req" light, even though from what I gathered on BobIsTheOilGuy.com it's probably safe to stretch to 7500 miles.
