This would be something that would make never want to give out any vehicle I own, no matter how big of a pos it is lol. Whenever I moved and a friend would offer, they would drive their truck. I was always afraid of denting, scratching something. I'm anal about my vehicles, I'm even worse with friends. If someone didn't offer(I wouldn't ask) I would rent a vehicle. Some of my friends are like me to when it comes to their vehicles, others I know are not. Those people who are not. I go where my truck goes, I drive if someone needs something. If a screw something up, the only person I have to blame is myself.

Thanks. I based that last post, where I said it's better to risk a door ding than to alienate FIL, on my family, mostly. By and large my family members tend to own up to stuff like that. Cousin borrowed my iPod and dropped it, when it was time to return it I was presented with a new iPod- an upgrade even- still in its factory plastic wrap along with an apology for the inconvenience of having to download all my music to it again (oh, the humanity!). Luckily that sort of thing is normal and expected in my family. Not everyone is that lucky.

    yes

some people are responsible and civil.

I don't like to borrow tools for example...because I feel if I broke it, I bought it.

I actually did this once, I borrowed an electric impact driver...tore it up. Then played like hell to find a reasonable replacement. I felt real bad. but my buddy was real cool about it...he told me he liked the new one even better.

I said: "me too, but you won't find ma asking to borrow it again, I bought two" :D

I had a co-worker run over my sirius satellite radio($200 CDN) with a forklift at work(He wasn't paying attention). He turned around and told me, "I'm not paying for it because you brought it to work". He said he wasn't at fault. He's the type of person I realized that no matter what you can't convince them their wrong when they're such in denial. If it was me I would have replaced it no questions asked. I just can't believe how some people really are in this world.

Ouch. I'm like you guys. I was staying with a friend and knocked her radio/CD player off the window sill and broke it. That afternoon when I went out I dropped by the store and replaced it. You broke it, you bought it. It's pretty simple. Same goes for trucks; I don't tend to borrow vehicles but if I did something that caused the vehicle to get damaged it's on me to fix it, and give the owner a ride or pay for a rental or whatever makes them happy if necessary while it's being fixed. At the same time though, anything the truck should be insured for, like hail damage or collision, I'll pay the deductible on it and make sure you have a ride; otherwise you should take it up with your insurance company. That's why insurance exists.

I have no family living near me so I don't have to worry about them asking to borrow my truck. It's just the friends and co-workers lol.

This truck is a work truck - not a lot of fancy mod's here, but it's getting the job done!
Either let him borrow it or man up and say no. Freakin kidding me - all this long drawn out explanation of why you should or shouldn't is BS... In the end, its your truck, your decision - you weigh the consequences and make the decision! Period.

I wish I had the time and patients to respond individually to most of you...it would be fun ;).

Anyway we are just going to go together. By saturday I should be able to drive (I hope and if I can't at least I'll be with him) and I need some things from BJ's too. The oddest part about this request is that he wants to do a 150+mile round trip (because the BJ's 20 miles away doesn't have the same shrubs) to save less than $100.

This ... "Cost Per Mile Calculator" ... will blow your mind on true costs to drive. ...

    AOL Auto has a 2011 Tacoma at 64 cents a mile ... --> http://autos.aol.com/cars-Toyota-Tacoma-2011/cost-to-own/

Good cost break down on AOL auto too. ..... Show this to him ... and see what he says ...

For a more expensive Tacoma model ... add some extra $$$ to the above numbers ...

PS ... When I bought my daughter a new car in college .... I told her it was like a big pitcher of water and she has to cross the desert with it. The more she uses it now (going to the beach & playin') ... the less she will have for later ... and she has learned a good lesson from this.

It's just a conversation. I had a similar conversation with my wife the other day about babysitting my fathers dogs while he is out of town.

The thing is... His dogs like to piss in the house. Not a lot but enough to piss me off ( no pun ). However, my dad will help me out with anything I ask him to no question. It's a burden, but sometimes we accept the burden because we know the other person would help us with ours.

I will watch his dogs..... But I'm still not letting him drive my truck. Lol

I never said not to do it - my first post on this thread supported lending the truck... Nothing trumps family but truth... and it's not a burden, it's pleasure to be able to help others. We should go out of our way to help others - that is what this country was founded on - that and working hard to provide for your family...

I'm with you on that. Still some people can be trusted with your property and done can't. If i ran through a list of my friends and family in my head I know I would lend to some and not to others.

Sometimes it's complicated and requires a little more thought. This Thread is interesting to me because it is not black and white and there are a lot of different perspectives.

*You* in this post refers to a general you, not any particular you. So don't get all offended.

I agree that the cost of operating a vehicle is a valid concern. But it's one of my pet peeves when people who purchase a vehicle like a Tacoma, that is blatantly, obviously not a cheap vehicle to own, complain about the cost of owning it. If you're that worried about it you should trade in your Tacoma for an Elantra or Kia Forte or something that's cheap to own: low maintenance costs, fuel efficient, low insurance, etc.

From OP's last post it looks like they have an acceptable situation worked out. I'm assuming FIL in this case, since he asked to go to a store farther from home so he could get the exact shrub he prefers, is paying for gas. So beyond that, why nickel and dime your family? Are you going to tell FIL, "Sure, you can pay for gas and I'll go with you, but I want you to know how much other costs on my vehicle this trip will be, on a per mile basis?" We were saying earlier in the thread FIL seemed cheap for not getting his own truck. Guess who is cheap now? The guy who bought a high operating cost vehicle and lets people borrow it- feigning generosity- but tells them how much he's put out by it.

Ya know what? Sometimes your family is going to cost you a little bit of money. Sometimes being nice is going to cost you a little bit of money. Who cares? Peace and a little goodwill with your in-laws is worth $50 now and then, and I'm sure it will come back anyway in the form of respect and helpfulness from the in-laws.

You seem like a very sweet and kind person ... with a respectful family ... but family dynamics are not all the same.

I was quoting a "price per mile" to show that driving those extra miles to save a 100 bucks on the bushes was going to cost the OP more than that in the long run.

Trust me on this one, I have given a lot to others and continue to do so in some ways. Some family & friends appreciate kindness and some do not, pure and simple.

On a side note, I do a lot of volunteer work and the groups that I find most appreciative are the children with severe medical problems and disabled military veterans. I am not as "cut & dried" as I seem in some of my posts. :D

From read your posts, it sounds like you and your family have a good relationship and integrity and good family dynamics in general ... count your blessings on this one.

I am not trying to say you sound like a miser or something like that at all, sorry if it came off that way. And I understand that, yeah, driving that extra distance will cost you in the long run. But those extra costs just shouldn't be a big deal unless you're starting to feel like you're being taken advantage of.

We have good family dynamics now but my family had a huge fight a few years ago, nobody was talking to each other, it was a huge fight when we did, etc. There were rescinded wedding invitations and all sorts of stupidity. Finally everyone realized the douchbaggery had to stop when essentially there was nearly an extra memorial service for my grandfather so the two main cliques in my family wouldn't have to interact at the funeral. Really? Come on. We're family. And that's my point, that none of that stuff matters. It's a little bit of money, FIL might not do it the way you'd do it or it might cost a little money but it really doesn't matter. :)
