What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

You guys doin mods and stuff. I'll be doing good if I clean out the inside of my truck on my day off.

Installed.

Things to note (or ignore):

1. I think it's definitely too glossy. The sheen matches the dash (gray/blue color) nicely, but the black of the stereo surround is more flat than the gloss black I used on the console. Looks a little off. Plus my taste leans away from gloss. So eventually I'll put a couple coats of flat on, but for now... it's good enough

2. I'm definitely changing the transfer case shift knob to flat black. It does not match the TRD tranny shift knob I have.

3. Now I have to do all the trim pieces on the door panels... it looks unmatched now that the console is gloss black.

4. I'm going to try and dye my shifter boots. If that fails (highly likely) then I'm buying aftermarket black ones. It looks uberstupid as it is right now

5. NO MORE POS '98-00 CUP HOLDERS!!!!!! 13 years in the making for me

I actually like the gray shifter boots - it still matches the dash and carpet color, and gives a nice contrast.
I agree the black is maybe a little too glossy, but it still looks good.
How do you think the paint will hold up on the console? Have you seen anything that concerns you like scratches or possible peeling while handling and installing?

 

What type of vehicle did your drink holders come out of?

I can foresee some issues after normal wear and tear, eg scratches, etc...

But nothing a quick touch up can't handle.

I think before I repaint them (down the road) I'm going to use some adhesive promoter. The paint/dye I used is for vinyl and fabric but has gotten rave reviews across many auto enthusiast boards.

Good luck with the hunt... since I didn't want to spend the $280 from the dealership, it took me 6 years (two years on TW) to finally score an 01-04 console assembly.

 

I found one on ebay but its tan, so the paint holds up good on the plastic?

 

Its more like a dye than a paint. It soaks into the plastic and its pretty hard to get it to chip off.

I did my grille and valance in it, as well as some interior pieces, and its holding up really well.

 

Honestly I would go with an adhesion promoter then a plastic specific paint.

But I think eventually all paint would need touch up.

 

I dunno man... just putting the screws back in on the side (where the cup holder meets the shifter trim), I barely touched the plastic and the screw tip left a mark.

We'll see. Like I said I've always been a "good enough" kind of guy so it doesn't bother me much

Dunno.

I used the Dupli Color prep wipe as recommended.

Just seems like more of a coating than a "soaking in" dye for plastic.

Cuz mine is rock hard.

I can take a key (within reason) to my valence and it doesn't scratch it.

 

I think it's because the valence is more of a rubbery surface (eg porous) and soaked in the paint/dye.

Whereas the plastic is a hard surface and the paint/dye acts more of a coating.

Let me know how it holds up on your shifter trim and other hard plastic pieces. I'm curious.

 

hmm, you might be right on that one.

What temp is it where you are now?

Its like 80 degs here, so paint sticks nicely to just about anything now. My dad even did a bunch of plastic parts on his ATV and they are holding up great.

I love the stuff...and I love the way it smells

 

It was 70 air temp when I did it.

But I also did it in part/mostly sun (which in Colorado is hot)

So who knows.

All I care about is that I've massively upgraded in consoles and it looks good enough.

Down the road I might care to repaint everything... until then fuck'it
