You need a chain ring with no ramps, and a chain guide. Remove front derailuer, shifter, cable....pull crankset remove all the chain rings, install new chain ring on middle mounts. Reassemble. If you use a chain guide/tensioner and you have triple crank you could run into the small chain ring mounts hitting, maybe not. I have to shim just a little bit on my crank to clear and swapped my bb spacer to the other side. It might require a little trial and error.

Parts linked....do you have ISCG tabs or gonna do the BB mounted? Either way the blackspire one is good.

I'm almost certain that's incorrect. At least for mountain bikes, they typically have 26" tires mounted on rims that are about 24" in diameter. I haven't measured my road bike to see if that carries over but I bet it would. It's the tire that has a 700mm diameter not the rim. And this makes sense because if I recall correctly, a 29er and 700c rim are the same diameter, but 29 inches is taller than a 700c by about 36mm.
*Just verified this on Sheldon Brown's site.

its a type of mounting for the chainguide. most new bikes use iscg or iscg-05 but thats usually only on all-mountain and dh/fr bikes

you have a hardrock right? i doubt it has iscg tabs so you will probably use a bb mount but what type of bb do you have? i dont think the bb mount will work with press fit bb will it?

    awesome youll love the flux

bottom bracket but yeah i dont think a chainguide would work unless you have an external bottom bracket since the BB mount goes between the shell and bottom bracket

I just run an unramped ring on mine with a bashguard. I don't even use a chainguide, and I've never had issues with the chain dropping. And the bike shop that pulled my crank for me recommended not removing any chain links.
That last comment was for a previous post.

ZR - There are a couple methods to this, which can be as cheap or expensive as you want to go.

    1. If you throw on a bash, you will not need smaller chain ring bolts
    2. You have 3 types of chainguides. The lower roller type (stinger), the full guide (lopes, LRP, SRS, Boxguide, silentguide, etc) or the upper guide (XCX type) If you want to stay budget (or ghetto :D) you can leave the front derailleur on, and this will keep the chain from coming off very well.
    3. A non-ramped chain ring is a good idea - but you can run with the one you have, and it will be fine most of the time - especially with the terrain we have in most of N. TX.
    4. I just pulled a blackspire stinger off my bike last weekend. It worked well for a few years - you can use one of these to run it:

These should work with most ISIS BB as well, no worries there.

remember to shorten your chain no matter which of these options you go with.

    thanks, Matt.
Is there much difference between a 32t and a 34t chainring? the one that I was looking at on Pricepoint was a 34t

Remember you are giving up your granny gear. I have a 32 on mine and I feel like I have plenty of efficiency when I need it on the small cog. But when going up a long hill I can still get a good ratio that makes the climb doable. If you're a monster then I wouldn't think twice about getting the 34. But I wanted to still have a decent climbing gear.
I guess that doesn't really answer your question about whether there's much difference! I've only run the 32 so that's my opinion on it.

Play with this gear ratio tool and then on your next ride use a certain gear combo that is comparable to your intended 1x setup and see how it feels on your typical steeps. I run 32t, if I was a manimal I'd run 34t.

You might not need a chain guide after you swap, maybe just see how it works out. In regards to your bottom bracket...you can get a chain guide that mounts to your seat tube, and there is a chain tension guide (can't recall the name or find the link) it attaches to your chain stay and has a pivot on it so it will work with a single ring or dual. If I can recall that guide I'll link it.
