I actually screwed my strop up a few days ago, not badly enough that I can't use it, but it took a lot of length out of the usable length.....so, I will actually probably buy a couple from here. I just dont know what type yet

thought about it.....I also need sand paper etc.....

that and it has had it happen a few times

its mainly small nicks up and down it. It still works, but I can feel the nicks when I strop anything less than like a 1/4 hollow.....so my full double concave jumps whenever I hit them.

That, and I would honestly like a better one anyways, Im thinking maybe the 3 inch wide one he has on the sight. along with a new bowl and maybe even a brush, or at least a knot. (crap.....its the AD again)

by the way krazie, I think I am gonna get a new soap (or 2) from mama bears. I've been using soley VDH (until I got new stuff) and then Art of Shaving sandal wood. How are the scents on mama bear's if you use them? also, any recomended good ones?

I'm still plowing through my Williams and my Proraso. Williams has a kinda citrus smell to it, but you need a lot of water otherwise it dries out. The Proraso is a menthol soap which will wake you up and chill your face like you dunked it in ice water. Good stuff. I believe it's second ingredient is stearic acid too so it's really good at making the whiskers soft fast.

I've got the bowl. I did get a puck of other soap for Christmas but I haven't had a chance to use it yet as I've still got so much Williams left. (Shit never dies, I swear.)

I'm actually really curious to try this one. Citrus and fern scent. Sounds like it would be kinda sweet yet earthy.

    http://www.fendrihan.com/kent-mitchells-wool-shaving-soap-p-27.html?cPath=116_2

Or this one. But you'd smell a bit like a hippy with the patchouli.

The Get Jack Black Shave Cream I ordered came yesterday so I was able to get a shave with it this morning. It's got a smell that you'll either like or hate, almost a liquorice-menthol sort of smell (I kind of like the smell of it). It seemed to lather up better than the Art of Shaving stuff I was using and also seemed to hold moisture better so it wouldn't clog the razor (using a Merkur safety blade). With the Art of Shaving cream, I noticed I had to disassemble the razor several times with each shave because it was clogged and I didn't have to do it at all with the Jack Black cream.

Also, first experience with the alum block... After all the hype, I didn't think it was that bad (and I had a couple bleeding knicks ). I did was Krazie suggested, rub the alum on your face until it stops burning, let it sit there while you clean your stuff out, rinse and then aftershave. You definitely notice a sting where you have a cut, but overall I thought it really made my face feel nice and smooth. I'd make sure you have a decent aftershave that's meant to moisturize your skin after the alum block though, it seems to dry it out pretty good.

Overall, I used Art of Shaving pre-shave oil, Get Jack Black cream, Edwin Jagger alum block, Art of Shaving aftershave, Merkur safety razor w/ fresh Merkur blade and a Parker badger brush and got the closest shave I've ever had and my face feels great!

ya, the menthol is what I don't like lol, I usually shave in the afternoons/evenings, which means I don't want to be woken up. I only use it when I shave in the morning

I am ordering some mama bears today, so I will post how that does.

(I believe the wet shavers have taken over this thread lol)

Straights and safety razors aside, I still think wet shaving is the best route you can go! I'd take my Mach 3 over an electric anyday. I've owned probably half a dozen electric razors from a cheap $15 one to a $100 and they just don't do as nice of a job as a razor and shave cream. And I recently discovered how much closer you can really get if you do it correctly (biggest change I noticed was shaving after a shower, I always used to shave before and the higher quality shaving products make it a more pleasant experience also).

I agree, electrics are crap, I have had a very good one....all it did was pull hair, most of them did now that I think about it). Since I have started straight/DE shaving, I have forgot things on vacations a couple times (usually DE blades) and had to use a cheap disposable. I took my time and used it like a DE and got a better shave than before I switched from disposables to DEs.

and ya, the shower helps a lot more than most people realize, or if you want a shower after (some people do) a hot towel will do the same thing.

Did you wash your face after the alum had dried? But yes it sucks the moisture out. I'm kinda used to it where I live. (Our winters are known to have less humidity than the desert...)
If there wasn't much of a burn that means you did a good job shaving! Congrats and I apologize in advance.

We've suckered you into another thing to spend money on...and you will spend more money on it. :p

Yeah, thanks to both of you to turning me on to another money drainer! :shakesfist:

Thanks to a Tacoma Enthusiast website, I've now purchased a safety razor, 2 brushes, a stand, shaving oil, 2 types of shave cream, aftershave, alum block, straight razor and a leather strop. BUT I haven't bought anything for the truck in over a month
