Is the TRD sport upgrade hard to come by?

First post, but have been lurking for sometime. This question is what motivated me to sign up.

I've been having a devil of a time finding a 2012 TRD sport upgrade package that suits me (double cab, short-bed, super white).

I've got one on order through my dealer (or so I've been led to believe). It has been a couple weeks since I put in my request - but no definitive answer from the dealer as to when or if they will have one shipped anytime in the near future.

Anyone else run into this, or am just paying the price for living in the boonies?

i guess depends on the area. that combo was available in a bunch of different options, but the TRD Offroad was hard to find here in NJ when i was buying.

Where abouts you at in Eastern Oregon? Might have alot to do with it depending on where you ordered it though.

It seems way more common on long beds. There are a gajillion tacos around here and i've yet to see a short bed sport.

The closest dealer for me is in Ontario, Oregon - right on the border of Idaho, going toward Boise. I've scanned the inventory of every dealer within 300 miles. Lots of Off-road packages - very few sport upgrade.

I realize my request is pretty specific, but I was doing a little math . . . Wiki says that Toyota sold around 110,000 Tacoma units last year. That means that the factory has to produce on average 300 units per day.

Maybe the real problem is that Toyota has too many choices in the Tacoma.

Yes, yes! Where are the short beds. That's always the deal killer for me.

I'm weird I suppose - I like to park in my garage.

My grandma use to live in Vale and I grew up in Roseburg so I know right where your at. Might be worth the trip into Boise if you cant find what your looking for or have your stealership contact Boise to see if they have any. Just an idea IDK.

never mind just reread the 300 mile thing so you already scoped out Boise.

I had a hell of a time time finding mine and it is a Nautical Blue 4X4 Sport LB non upgrade with entune. Finding one with all the options I wanted was the problem. I searched the western half of the US and eventually had to wait until one was being built and had it allocated to the dealer I was near but it took a long time.

    Appreciate the tip.

But that's nearly an 800 mile round trip for me - 3 tanks of gas and all day driving. There's got to be a better way.

I've looked. But the other killer is that Oregon doesn't have sales tax - Idaho does - and won't cut you a deal when you're from out of state - although Washington will for some reason.

How long are we talking. I'm willing to wait, but I've got to get my head around the time frame.

Unique situation. I was in California and they had one being built and allocated to the dealership I was at but couldn't get the full VIN or list it as sold to me. I live in Nebraska. I waited and they continued to push the delivery date back until I could not wait any longer and I left. Two days later it arrived in Ca but I wasn't going 1500 miles back to get it. I called my local dealer in Ne while I was in Ca and he told me at the time he couldn't get me a Blue long bed at the moment, but he could get me a grey one. I waited until I returned to Ne. once I arrived I walked into the dealer around 20 Jan 12 and asked again. In the system was one schedualed to be built for a dealership in San Antonio in the end of Feb. I agreed on a price and did the deal and we got the full VIN and listed the truck as sold about 6 weeks before it even began the build process.

In a nut shell, if your being dicked around (with the VIN info and listing the truck as sold to you) go to a different dealer, but if they say they don't have the truck they probably don't have a way to get it and neither does anyone else unless they are hiding one at a dealership that they havent listed in the big Toyota system yet. I found 2 other Double cab long beds that were a different color that other dealerships didn't know about.

Time depends on the date it is schedualed to be built. Mine was built on 24 Feb, but I don't know when it arrived at the dealer because I was deployed...they held it for me.

the lb's are hard to find in my area.
Correct me if Im wrong, but isnt the only difference between the sport and the upgrade the 18" wheels/tires? How hard can it be for a dealer or the regional distributor to just add those?
and yes, I think its mostly a boonies thing

Yep, but both Sport and Upgrade have different codes to search in the computer so if the wheels are not that important you could also search for the non upgrade too.

Tons of DCSB's around me and I had a hard time finding a DCLB. Finally found a DCLB and it happened to be the sport upgrade so I got that.

Auto sales trends are regional so there is no blanket statement about availability. In general , however, TRD models go pretty quickly. It is not uncommon for a dealer to sell a model the week it is put on the lot, especially if it is a popular color. The dealer closest to me actually sold a Black TRD Offroad DC the day went on the lot. People tend to shop around for these models. Dealers can get a little furstrated as these are big sellers in many spots, especially the NE and rocky mountain areas. Toyota is still recovering some from the hurricane issues. Dealers in my local area tell me they want more TRD stock but they often get lower volume than requested as they have to spread them around. In fact, they make a lot of sales on people who come in looking for a TRD package and end up going for a standard 4x4 trim instead.

I had to travel 100 miles to a dealer who had the TRD Sport I just picked up last month. Best bet is to check inventory online at dealers within a desired radius. Didn't want to order mine as the dealer said there is a backlog right now. They don't make a lot of pyrite mica because it is not the most popular color so I was lucky to find one. I wanted something other than the popular silver, black, or white.
