So the wife and I went out for a bite to eat. On the way home we decided to swing by the local creek to check the water level - we like to canoe on the weekends when the water level is right. Sure enough as we are making the loop through in my wife's outback we see a truck buried in the mud about 100 yds off the road.

We have a brief conversation w/ the owner, he doesn't have any help coming. I walked the trail and decided that even though it was a little soupy, I wouldn't have any trouble getting back there in my Tacoma (actually, my son's Tacoma...) The guy has a full sized Dodge crew cab 4wd high centered in a mud hole, water over the rear bumper. He says he has a strap and will have it hooked to the trailer hitch when I come back.

    So...

Seems like a teachable moment to my 16 year old son, not only about trying to help your fellow man, but more importantly, how to pull someone out without becoming the next guy in line waiting for a pull. My son is ready to go when we get home and we jump in his '07 DCSB Sport 4wd w/ 5100's at 1.75", firestone air bags at 15 psi and almost new Mickey Thompson ATZ's, 265/70 R17.

First thing we do when we pull off the road is air down. The guy seems a bit puzzled - "The trail is pretty solid to where I got stuck, I don't think you'll have a problem...."

I reply, " Thanks, just force of habit, won't take a minute...."

So about 5 minutes later, all 4 tires at 20 psi, we shift into 4hi, then 4lo and crawl back to the guy's truck. I turned around to be rear to rear about 30 yards from his truck. He's trying to stretch his strap to my bumper waving me back... I stopped, suggested adding another strap and he agreed.

So I direct my son, "watch till I've got the slack out, then come get in the truck. This is probably gonna get a little rough, 'cause he's high centered and we will probably have to bump him out. We'll start slow and easy first..."

I get the slack out, son in the truck, give it a little gas and my little Tacoma just walked this guy out of there. Didn't spin a tire, engine barely loaded up, just walked him right out of the hole! Pulled him partially sidways because his line was off about 30 degrees from mine.

My son said, "Well that wasn't as big a deal as I was expecting...."

    "Me either, son..."

Never a bad thing to pull someone out of trouble easily, but still I was a little bummed that it wasn't a little harder so that I would be able to show my son. Should have got some cell phone pictures, didn't think about it - sorry!

Sounds great. I'm by no means an expert when recoveries are involved... just have a couple under my belt. But I'm sure that non-events are cheaper than spectacular displays of mud-slinging, U-joint exploding, axle snapping awesomeness.

    Thanks for sharing.

Tell the guy that for your generous act he needs to get his truck re-stuck in the same place so you can take pics for this really awesome forum that prides itself on Tacomas being better than his shitty truck. :D

No big deal. My dad and I were talking about a trip to Big Bend with his F-150 4x4, never found time for it but it would be a cool trip to take. I'd love to do a Texas Camping meet out there.

I pulled this full sized Ford out of some snow. He came knocking on my door asking to use the phone, i asked if everything was alright. Then he tells me he is stuck up behind the house with his 4X4. I tell him i got a tow rope he kind of chuckles. Thing is i had just put on a set of studded snow tires, not ten miles on them, i was driving a 91 xtra cab at the time. I went up behind the house, drove around him, hooked on to his front bumper with my front tow hook and towed him back to the road, it was too funny. I could see his buddy in the truck with him he was giving him a hard time about this little truck dragging the big old Ford around. His only problem was he had almost bald summer tires and we had six to eight inches of fresh snow
