It's a great truck, runs real good. Engine oil changed regularly… The wife only drives it a few miles to work and back.

Could the main page be edited to note that 2009+ Sports do not necessarily have LSD? It took me forever to read through this, though realistically 'bend over and look under the back of the truck for the sticker' is probably the best method for checking. Could also note the Torque for each bolt, which I think is 36ftlb.

2009 Sport, Valvoline 80w-90, No additive, changed at 30K.
All in all it took me 30 minutes, most of that was pumping. Oil came out clear gold, with little on magnet and I tow 4000 pounds fairly often.
It took around 3.3 Qts to hit the overflow. Does that sound like to much? I think I may go warm up the oil, then see if it will drain any more.

Thanks for all of the great info.

Edit made. The manual calls for 3 quarts. Not more. Over filling the diff can cause the oil to cavitate, thus causing the gears to over heat.

Newbie here, this is a great forum. Took care of this today. The Fill hole bolt was a real SOB. Had to get some PB Blaster and a breaker bar to get it off. I would recommend you take the spare tire off it gives you tons of room to work. Filled mine up with Mobil 1 Syn 75-90. I have a 2010 Tacoma TRD Off Road V6.

    Thanks for the information!

Thanks for the great instructions. I used Lucas synthetic 70W-90 it said no need for LSD as it contains all need additives. I bought 4 quarts for the extra 4 oz. I'll let the wife drive it and I'll check the level next week. As far as I know it the first change at 155k. I also changed the spark plugs and cleaned the TB and Mass Flow sensor.

My rear end had an LSD sticker on it as shown in the pictures in the step by step instructions. Fluid had a redish tint to it.

This was a great write-up, Chris! Just completed this at 30K. I'm one of the people that was able to pump in close to 3.5 quarts of oil. After reading the thread, looks like a few others had the same experience. I used a breaker bar and the bolts came off with ease. Thanks again for saving us some $$ and teaching us something.

Did you see this comment by chris4x4? I overfilled mine as well, but went back after this comment and redid the entire process with Royal Purple (Expensive). 3 quarts straight.

I read through most of the pages in this thread and got confused in terms of needing to add the additive or not. In the first post by the OP, brianr, his sig shows that he has a 2010 and in the pics he is adding the Equa Torque additive. However the edit made in the post notes that 2009 and newer trucks do not need to add the LS diff additive.:confused::confused::confused:

I have a 2009 SR5 v6 4x4 non TRD/OR and I do have the LSD sticker on the rear. So do I need the additive or not?

This is something to try.....and my mind is a little foggy, so perhaps someone else can confirm or deny this...

Jack up the rear of the truck and put it in neutral (chock the front wheels).

Spin one of the tires by hand....

If the other tire spins in the OPPOSITE direction, then you have a mechanical LSD and NEED friction modifier.

I love my new truck but miss my Tacoma
You have that backwards. If your checking for a mechanical LSD, when you jack the car up and the tires spin in the opposite direction then you have a open diff. If they spin in the same direction then you have LSD. Keep in mind the trucks that use E-LSD will have an open diff and spin in the opposite direction.

I have the mechanical LSD and I'm pretty sure mine spins opposite (and why I mentioned it).

Mine spin the same direction. My open diff on my 2000 did the same thing. This isnt an accurate way to determin what rear you have.
