Kind of interesting your bro Larry just did a write up ttora and was questioned regarding his choice of material for his skids. Larry said

" I have a hard time believing that aluminum would hold up to what I do"

Again with the 1/4 plate steel is all that will hold up to my extreme rock crawling theory.

    Here is the response:

I just thought it interesting given the direction of this thread. As a side note, rockcrawlers in the jeep world, doing the most extreme trails
are for the most part running or starting to run aluminum for skids, sliders, bumpers etc..

Just food for thought, its your truck and you use what works for you, just saying might be worth broadening your horizons a bit and investigating other materials. Again, light weight is king;)

 Yes I think the idea of aluminum plate with a steel sub frame really applies to making aluminum cages.

Thats like saying we should start building cages out of schedule 40 steel pipe, I mean hell it's steel right?

I don't tell anyone to run anything its your vehicle do what you like I'm just offering another opinion. Dont get to sucked in to the "This is what my bro does it must be right" line of thinking, go do a little reading and research on your own you might be surprised.

I see a lot of anecdotal references and very little substance to most of the claims I've heard.

For the record, I'm no fanboy and I dont have any Allpro stuff on my truck yet but let me point out something very important to the critics here -

Allpro is a major pillar in this little segment and goes above and beyond to support events, trail and land use issues and alot of other things many take for granted. I've seen Toyota fabbers and vendors come and go. Some missed and some not. But bashing a stand up business like Allpro or any company that supports US, the ENTHUSIASTS, with specious comments and hyperbole is just lame.

Without solid vendors like Allpro our little "Tacoma World" would be a lot less cool.

Aluminum armor is out there. Asfir, Budbuilt to name a couple off the top of my head. Go price them... aluminum skids are stupid expensive IMO for the weight savings.

If there's anywhere I'd want to take the hit on weight for steel armor, it's under the belly of the truck.

All I can end with is I know there are many engineers and experts here, obviously, but just take a few minutes, even use google as a starting point if you like and learn a small amount about metal and why and how its selected and for what purpose. Nowhere did I claim Aluminum is superior for every application, in fact I only spoke of one specific application. However roll cages are in fact fabbed out of aluminum if you look around, so are chassis and a many other things. Design, application operating environment etc.. a host of factors come in to play when selecting metal. Aluminum is certainly not the correct choice for everything, I'm just saying it can be a choice and it can be a better choice than steel.

Dont forget that Aluminum has it's own inherent issues especially when mated to steel...

From reading this I would say there communication sucks.
I would also conclude that the steel they use is cheap and thin.
