Changed oil, now engine is ticking.

    So I changed the oil in my 2.7 Taco today, and now the valves are ticking pretty bad. I used 5w30 as specified on the oil cap. It wasnt ticking before I changed the oil. Its not losing any oil, it reads full on the dipstick and no leaks. any ideas?

    4.10 gears, sliders, and lots of buttons.
    All Tacoma engines tick. The 2.7 has alot of ticking noises. Its normal. Why it wasnt ticking before, Im not sure. Unless whoever did the last change put some addative in the oil to stop it. The ticking is a good thing, though.

    ticks at operating temp.

    ticking is good? I dont think I've heard that before.

    did you mean 10w30?

    anyway... I used 5w30 and its been about 50-60 degrees outside, engine temp gauge right in the middle. the engine seems to run fine otherwise.

    mine (02 3.4) ticks for a couple days after every oil change. it stops though.

    as far as I know, my 3.4 dosent tick and i use 10w30. ive got 127K on mine also

    Lots of things in the 2.7 make noise. Injectors. Timing chain, and the valzes. not really the "vslves", but Toyota uses a shim under bucket valve adjusting method. There is always going to be enough of a gap to cause a "Tick". Honda, Nissan, and other manufactuers mask this ticking with sound supression methods of their own design. Toyota doesnt. Sometimes, a different oil may help to mask the ticking. Some people have tried different addatives in the oil (I never recomend this). As long as performance is not diminished in any way, all is "normal".

    this si the first oil change sinc eI bought the truck a few days ago. I wonder if the previous owner was using some heavier oil than 5w30.

    Could have. Stick with the 5w30 or the 10-w30. 10w-30 if your truck never sees freezing weather.

    I used valvoline max life oil... is that crappy oil? causing the ticking maybe?

    Thats a good oil, and many folks use it. I mentioned above what the ticking is caused from. Its a long read, but read this for more info on oils:

    Yeah....I think the 10w-30 is good for around 10* below 0* or something.....

    its definitely valve tick. Only reason it bothers me is because it wasnt there before I changed the oil. Its louder than the valve tick on an older BMW that hasnt had its valves adjusted in a long time.

    If it sounds like too much, take it to the dealer and have them give a listen to it. Toyota engines tick louder than most.
