I knew we had a mud flap law but I never read it. Has anyone actually got a ticket for this? I've had TONS of cops behind me, none pulled me over for not having my mud flaps. Or does this not apply to me since I have not modified my suspension at all? Just curious.(read bold section)

A.R.S. Section 28-958.01 sets forth Arizona's mud flap law:
28-958.01. Rear fender splash guards A. A person shall not operate a truck, trailer, semitrailer or bus on a highway unless the vehicle is equipped with rear fender splash guards that comply with the specifications provided in this section. B. The splash guards: 1. Shall be attached in a manner that prevents the splashing of mud or water on the windshield of other motor vehicles. 2. Shall extend to a length of not more than eight inches from the ground. 3. Shall be wide enough to cover the full tread or treads of the tires being protected. 4. Shall be installed close enough to the tread surface of the tire or wheel to control the side throw of the bulk of the thrown road surface material. 5. May be constructed of a flexible rubberized material. 6. Shall be attached in a manner that, regardless of movement either in the splash guards or the vehicle, the splash guards retain their general parallel relationship to the tread surface of the tire or wheel under all ordinary operating conditions. C. This section does not apply to: 1. A vehicle commonly known as a pickup truck with a manufacturer's rating of three-quarter ton or less, except that this section applies if the pickup truck has been modified from the original bumper height design to raise the center of gravity of the pickup truck. 2. A truck tractor or converter dolly when used in combination with another vehicle. 3. A single axle trailer with fenders wide enough to cover the full tread or treads of the tires being protected and that extend to a length of not more than fourteen inches from the ground.

See from what I'm reading I think a stock tacoma doesn't require them, unless you lift it. I never understand these damn laws.

I was driving on a road they were redoing near Aspen one summer that was covered with loose gravel and had a 45 mph speed limit. About every 200 yards there was a "Do not pass" sign, which about 40 of us were obeying. Then some yahoo in a lifted pickup truck with no mud flaps came tearing down the left lane at 70 mph and proceeded to throw rocks into everyone's windshields. I only hope that someone caught the bastard down the road and gave him the fines (or beating) he deserved.

Arizona's laws are much stricter than ours in Washington St. I think when i looked I could lift my truck 4" and run 285's and still not be required to use flaps.

That's the way that I understand it. I've been running no mudflaps for about a year. Never been pulled over.... Though now that I've said that I probably will.

You are correct. A stock 3/4 ton or less pickup does not have to use flaps. If you raise the height of the truck at all, it applies and you would need to run flaps.

I haven't yet, and I haven't seen or heard of anyone get it yet unless it was a skyjacker. That said, to the letter of the law, I'm breaking it right now without any. Most cops around here don't seem to mind much though, in fact most seem to drool over our trucks anyway.

Plus, I think a lot of the cops are tired of people tailgating constantly and probably figure if someone gets a rock in the face from a truck without flaps, they earned it. That's just my thought process though.

Not sure if we have a law like that in GA but I would think it is one of those things that some counties enforce and some could care less. Like illegally tinted windows, in my town youll never get pulled over. Go twards ATL you be pulled over as soon as you get into a populated city.

I forget the numbers, but if the rear of tire, to rear of bumper is a certain number in reference to the height of rear bumper to ground then you need flaps.

Some states require fender flares as you can have zero tire sticking out.

It's all in the interpretation of the cop that pulls you over. The Az law was written when a truck was more of a semi or a flatbed. Since pick ups have become popular they need to rewrite the law. What's the difference from my lifted truck and your lifted jeep? If I have to run em but jeep guy doesn't what's the difference. He k at least I have some bed after my tire where jeep guy has nothing lol

I used to get hit all the time in my other truck, being on 37's made it stand out more. I just put removable flaps on for wheeling

It's just a fix it ticket anyway. It's nothing that goes on your record and most judges throw em out anyway because they realize it's a waste of time and it's usually just the police officer being picky.

Good info. I've had mine off for months and never had issues. I've been pulled over a few times and they never said anything.

Alot don't even know about it lol usually the ones giving tickets have a hard on about it. A few Leo friends of mine say its stupid and don't wanna waste their time with something so petty there is bigger better things going on

Sorry if any Leo's on here that give mud flap tickets get mad :D

Also laws are to the discretion and interpretation of the Leo issuing the citation. That's why you go to a judge and can plead your case. The Leo issuing isn't ALWAYS in the right.

Ya your attitude deffinatly comes into play of your gonna get the book thrown at you or not lol

Although each time I was pulled over for flaps it was for just that. Not speeding, not driving like a douche, etc. heck one time the Leo pulled me over because he had just gotten a chip in his windshield on his personal car. Needless to say I fabbed up some removable flaps for wheeling.

Havent taken em off the DC yet either, prob won't till I make some removable ones

Just a bunch of old crap
Had em off for years. Never an issue. Usually the cops are too busy checking out the truck and paying compliments, and I don't drive like an ass to draw attention to such petty ticket-worthy things.
