Unfinished interior of caps.

Anyone ever do anything to the inside of their unfinished cap? The white fiberglass is starting to bother me. Thinking about painting it with some roll-on bedliner coating.

Thoughts?

 

How bout bed rug material ?

My cap came with a grey roof liner , I wonder if you could add that on your own

 

Same here. It was only another $150 to get the cloth headliner material.

Speaker cabinet cloth... black or gray... and a few cans of 3M "90" (77 may not hold up long term) and you're good to go.

Probably the same stuff... mine is pretty heavy. Looks and feels like the stuff I used to use on speaker cabinets, but the stuff I've seen on commercial cabinets is thinner.
But mine were built for road use.

 

I asked my leer dealer if they could install the headliner. They said no and that it's a factory installed option only.

That's because your cap dealer only has minimum-wage installers that know how to operate a fork lift and how to find the brake light wire.

They aren't upholstery people and you wouldn't like the result if they did it.

It CAN be done... just not by the dealer.

The nice thing about the carpet is it has a certain amount of "give" and stretch. You can use 4 pieces to do the front, sides, and top and working carefully, have no wrinkles or visible seams even though nothing is actually stitched together.

You should be able to have it done at an upholstery shop for a couple or three hundred bucks.

 

My last few shells had the liner from the factory. But I have been looking for a used shell, and wondered what to do if I found one without the liner. Thought about taking the time to tape off and paint the inside as you suggested, I know the carpet would be harder to install correctly. Just prep the surface as you would any surface prior to painting and you should be good to go...

 

I got an ARE from a place in Albany, NY a couple years ago. I ordered it with carpeted inside and it came in without. The dealer installed carpet rather than send it back, but like someone else said, I really wasn't that happy with it. I would probably go with some sort of spray on bed liner if I ever get another.

 

To get someone to do the carpet liner right would cost alot more then painting. I feel if you have a white, or light colored truck the standard white gel coat finish does not look bad, but its too much white for a dark color truck IMO. Also, do not forget having the carpet liner helps with condensation issues inside the the cap the paint will not. If your not camping in it, and its just for looks, just tape off the windows and spray away. This type of surface would be hard to screw up painting, probably look just fine if you cut in with a brush and rolled it out with the rough surface of the fiberglass finish. I vote paint, its cheap, and will look good painted, and will be easier, and something many can do well.
