Taking all opinions on whether or not to go with 4x4 or 2x4. I have owned a 2wd 4Runner and always felt like I should have gone 4x4. So tonight me and my GF go to buy a new Taco DC 4x4, but they didn't have any of the colors I wanted (Black or MG). So we drove a 2wd w/ OR pkg and it felt great.
So I told the sales guy we wanted to talk and of course the conversation turned to how often am I going to use 4wd. We just built a home right on the lake so probably will just tow watercraft and use as my dd. I know that if I get 4wd I am going off road and the Taco is a truck I will keep for a long time.
Pricing for 4x4 DC with (EJ)entunes, (TW)tow, (OC)off road pkg, (RL) running lights, window tint, R2 running boards(which I don't want) and floor mats is $32,516.00, this is for a silver one they had on the lot.
I had an internet qoute for the same setup without running boards for $31398.00, but the guy who gave me that price was not there.
So like I said, love to hear your opinions and logic as well as what everyone thinks about those prices. Sorry for such a long post, but I figure this is the right place to get some solid feedback.

X2 and i’m in TN. way i look at it is this. if you ever HAVE/NEED to move for job or what ever. you may need it. also why not have it and not use it much than not have it and REALLY need it?!?! also it can some times help on slick boat ramps.

we go to NY to see family so thats another reason i got it. also i hunt and comes in handy some times.

I see the Great White North is well represented here. I really am finding it hard to find any reason not to go 4x4. My GF asked me what I was doing on the computer and I told her I was getting other opinions about the Taco and just kept thinking that for 2k, I should not give it a second thought...I mean, she just got the keys to a brand new house today that she got to pick out almost everything except media room, game room and my office. So I am going to pull the trigger on the 4wd option. Now to find one in the color I want.
BTW, that was a huge game for Pittsburgh...but a long way to go.

TACO721, all great points. I assume K-town is Knoxville...nice country down your way. Trying to check out your build, but dang ol' connection is giving me fits...

By the way, 90% of tacomas in Canada are 4x4's. They no sell prerunners.

I have a prerunner. Its actually handled pretty good offroad. The OFFRoad package with the rear locker is a must. I still have problems in the snow and mud tho.

I'm getting a 4x4 next but thats because its required for the offroading im trying to do and because of the snow here. A modified prerunner workes great for the dunes, loging roads and daily driving.

If you dont get snow there and arnt going to drive anywhere where they get snow ever and dont plan on doing serious offroading, a prerunner might be fine for you, save money up front, on gas and future maintaince.

Neither am I...Hey, I was pulling for the Canucks last year...maybe they can make it back this year. My team can't even make the playoffs, so I live in the past enjoying the two cups they won, because they probably will never get another one...unless they clone Sakic, Roy, Forsey, Foote and well...nevermind, it's better to just remember the good times. Maybe they can get Peyton Manning to lace 'em up.

My first truck was a 1989 Standard Cab 4x4. Rarely used 4x. Next was a 1998 Expedition 4x. Hardly used it. So, when I got my next car, 2000 Excursion, just bought 2x. First trip to Lake Havasu with my Sea-Doos, got stuck, had to be pulled out of an unimproved launch. 2nd trip, got stuck again. I learned my lesson. Every vehicle I've owned has been 4x, and the one I didn't get, I ended up needing it. After that, went back to 4x's. Two Jeeps and now my Taco.
Somehow you never need it until you don't have it!
    Buy the 4x!

yep knoxville. and it is. maybe if you up this way for a bit, i’ll show you some of the back roads and mountains that most don’t see or think about. i don’t have much done yet. going to gone most of winter with out a real job just done odd stuff for friends and family. not bad really. but talking to a boat dock this week about a summer job.

edit: past 2 summers i did yards. but i’m kinda tired of that. only did my parents aunts, and my cousins a few times.

Yup, thoes are even kind of rare around here. Ive only seen 2 05+ prerunners around since I bought the truck.

Ya, its always something good to have, just in case. If you can afford it and think it might be useful, go for it.

I may use 4x4, where it is really needed, twice a year. Duck hunting, pulling the boat out, etc. But, just like a chain, jumper cables, or a good battery, when you need it, you need it. Its always comforting to know you dont have to be stuck or wait on a tow....go 4x4!

As for the price, I know your in Texas, but World Toyota in Atlanta has 2012 TRD offroad 4x4 for $28300ish, dealer free included!

You don't need a 4x4. If you get stuck, you can always get one of these 4x4s on TW to come tow you out.

If you can handle a less gas mileage and just alittle more maintince definitely go with the 4x4 , I know wish I would have done that instead of a Prerunner.

FYI I live in Florida and all this beach sand sucks with a 2wd
