I am suppossed to be installing my 3 inch lift tomorrow. Then I am getting new tires soon. Im looking at Wild Country Radial mts. I dont want to do a 33 because everyone says the little power you have is gone, Gas completely sucks even with feather weight foot, and it sucks unless you regear which i dont want to do. Should i do 31 or 32? I have 30s on right now but want bigger.

every step up you will lose mpgs.

    the choice is yours...

265/75r16 is 31.6", and requires no cutting..right in the middle of what you want :D

hell if you are THAT worried about the 1.5mpg loss you will get with a killer looking 33" tire then just get a 32. 31" and 30" tires are little roller skate tires. I have a better idea, if you are that concerned with mpgs you probably shouldn't get a Mud Terrain tire. They weigh more, ride worse, make more noise and wear down faster. Unless you plan on mudding with your 2wd and your truck spends most of its time on the road just get an All Terrain tire.

Im not worried about 1.5mpg at all! If thats all i lost id be happy! and yeah i hate the nitto terra grapplers i have right now...they are probably the worst in my opinion...defiantly not going to street tire so figured id try a mud terrain...and yeah i like the noise mud tires make and dont really care about worse of a ride as long as it looks good....but yeah ive been offroad a couple times in it and have done perfectly fine so dont hate on 2wd!:D

an all terrain isnt a street tire lol. my 33" bfg a/ts have some pretty chunky tread. Instead of telling you how many mpgs i lost ill tell you what mpgs i get. My truck is a 96 xcab 4x4 with the 2.7, auto transmission and 4.56 gears. Before the new lift and tires i was running some bald 31" discos and i was getting 19.5 mpg driving 60/40 highway city trying to keep the revs at 2k in the city. After the lift and tires i not get 18-18.5 mpg with the same driving style. you will lose more with a mud terrain fyi

I never said all terrains were a street tire? lol but yeah i know a mud tire is heavier and ill loose more mpgs because they are made with a lot more plys then other tires....im not an idiot lol just saw some threats to where people made it seem like they lost 3-4 mpgs and they rubbed even after trimming/pinchweld mod, and just sucked...but yeah thanks for info...after you telling me how much you lost helps a lot...and gear ratio...im pretty sure my truck is the 4.10 ratio...and not totally sure how all that works...the 4.56? would that make a big difference?

mpg with lift and 31 dunlop a/t was always 17-18 city 22 highway. now with 31 km2 i get a super shit ride with usually 16-17mpg city and 22 highway. with mud terrains there is more rolling resisatance with the lugs therefore the mpg loss..also they are heavier. wish i had the 33x 9.5 to see what my mpgs would be

you said you weren't going to a street tire so you might try a mud terrain, i thought you meant that an A/T was a street tire. I didn't need to trim at all to fit the 33s for street driving, and i dont think i will even need to trim the front for wheeling. there is just enough space even stuffed i dont think it will rub. How much you need to trim really seems to be a crap shoot between different trucks. To give the auto I4 some power to move I have the lowest gears you can get in a tacoma, so my mpgs will be less than someone with higher gears.

whats your transmission and driving style and highway/city average?

No i meant to say those were basically my two options in tires haha...but yeah i guess most of those people off road a lot and you say you dont have to trim which is :D....and im kinda lost on gear ratio...with my 4:10 will my mpg be worse then yours??...and 2.7l 4 and i dont really speed, its just from like a stop to the speed limit i get up and go which im working on! and in city i probably get 16-17- maybe 18!...and highway i get about 21-22...........Btw thanks for all the help!

a few people have noted that the earlier year tacomas do better with lifts and tires and trimming. they are just a bit more durable and dont need as much work. Im more worried about the rear wheel being too far back and rubbing the rear of the wheel when flexing. Having the 4.1 you should be getting better miles if everything else was constant.

The next time you fill up reset the odo and try keeping less than or equal to 2000 rpm when driving around town, and dont go over 2500 on the highway. you should see a pretty good mpg jump just from doing that of you stick to it the entire duration of the tank.

and no problem, anything to help out
