Went a little crazy with adding D-rings

I have been hauling the bike to quite a few track days recently and constantly find myself wanting to tie down a gas can or ramps or other gear. I went to Home Depot and picked up these mini D-Rings, that are rated for 30 lbs - adequate to strap down small stuff. Bought a 10 pack and went a little crazy

 

i just dont know if i would trust driving behind you lol hit a bump and break one of those d rings or head off the bolt and there goes your load

Those bolts are only screwed into plastic inserts I believe. Not the safest point to secure weight to.

Geez TW people! It's not like I am holding up my bike with those "D Rings" These would be used to strap down lightweight aluminum ramps (~20-30 lbs?), gas can (~20-30 lbs?), gear (~10-20 lbs?) etc. Supposedly they are rated for 30 lbs each...

 

Perfect for all your 30 lb items you will transport.

 

Just to have loops to tie shit to keep from sliding around. How are they anchored? Just screwed into the bed liner?

Scratch that, I see you used existing bolts and screws.

 

^ it's still kinda scary. do you realize how easily those screws on the tailgate can strip out... or fail. the screws are anchored by soft plastic...

also, with the tailgate bouncing around, i wouldn't trust it.

 

those existing bolts and screws are going in to plastic clips, not the tailgate.

 

The d-rings are rated for 30lbs. The screws you have attached them to your tailgate with were never intended to be load bearing.

THAT is the problem.

If your aluminum ramps come flying off your tailgate at 70 and impale the driver behind you, you're going to have some immediate and serious problems. You might get lucky with this time and time again. It's if you don't that I'm worried about.

Buy a bed extender or roof rack. Stuff like this is why they exist.

The threaded inserts inside the tailgate are plastic and VERY easily stripped out, nor would I trust the "D" rings you purchased. You stand a very good chance of having the ramps come loose and causing an accident for anyone following behind you.

 

please do not use those unless you plan on killing someone in the process

 

I don't see any problem here, as long as the tailgate gets closed after the ramps get strapped down. if you are leaving the gate down, thatis just asking for problems.

 

I'm pretty sure the tailgate is down to fit the bike in the bed, and there's no room to pack the extra equipment around it.

What the OP really needs in that situation, if that is the situation, is a bed extender.

From what I could tell about the "D" rings, they look like something for holding pictures on walls, not securing a load in a moving vehicle.

 

Good point... "if" he is planing to use this setup with the gate down he should have went with a bed extender... if not then he should have went with a little common sense... which would have led back to the bed extender.

I would not be using the tailgate bolts to secure any kind of load at all.
I've got two that are installed, but "stripped" to the point that they won't snug down after being removed twice... once to install my pop-lock, and once to install my BedRug.

Replace the plastic inserts with some Riv-Nuts and matching screws and you'll have something that's at least as strong as the tailgate sheetmetal... which still isn't nearly 30lbs.

No way I would drive with that stack of ramps back there.
