I honestly tried to use the search function on this forum... I got no where with it... its kinda hit or miss...

so hope this question hasnt been asked a million times but...

I have a 96 4x4 2.7L 5spd with 168k on it... unknown service history..

check engine light is on, fault for oxygen sensor heating... guess it needs an o2 sensor??

do I have r12 a/c or r134a?

what maintenance should I do now that is or was due around 168k?

change oil and spark plugs, engine cleaning, under body cleaning, tire pressure check and rotation! And maybe even seafoam it!

 

Your A/C uses R-134a. R-12 was banned around '94 or so.

If you don't have a service history, it wouldn't be a bad idea to take a good look at all of your wearable parts. Check the belt for cracks, inspect your ball joints, check your plug wires & pull a spark plug or two so you can have an idea of how recently they were changed and if they need to be replaced. It also wouldn't hurt anything to change your front and rear differential oil with that many miles on your truck.

 

cleared the fault, next day, same fault again. I replaced the coolant temp sensor. seems to have fixed the issue.

 

What was the exact code?

 

as far as maintenance, i would definitely change out every fluid, and spark plugs. switch your gear case to mobil 1 if its not in there already to, expensive but def worth it IMO

 

just yesterday, I did trans fluid and rear diff fluid, use valvoline synthetic 75-90. I also put new cap, rotor, plugs and plug wires on. I did both o2 sensors the day before that.

My transfer case fill plug head is rounded, and I didnt have an 12mm allen socket to do the front diff.

It's unlikely you'd have problems with the timing chain, but I'd have someone look at it. Chains stretch over time and can get sloppy and loose. Sometimes the extra slop can cause other problems.

 

I replaced the coolant temp sensor, and the check engine light has not come back, and the truck is running better, aka...entering closed loop mode.
