Should this already be happening? (leaf springs)

Hey all, so the other day i was loading a new tool box in my truck and fo some reason decided to look at the leaf springs, i didn't like the fact that they are already rusting.

I've only had the truck since November 2011.

These are pictures of the rust that has already started.








Should i be concerned with this?

 

oh and i have the rust protection done when i bought the truck

You only need road salt on there for a couple days in warm weather for it to eat through the thickest paint. Salt isn't a problem in cold (say, 35 and below) temperatures because the cold temp slows any corrosive reaction. Once it starts to warm up though, look out. Remember in high school chemistry about heat increasing rate of chemical reactions?

You're gonna want to wash your truck immediately (24 to 48 hours) after the temp gets above 40 when there have been recently salted roads. Thoroughly. Don't waste your time with one of those touchless pieces of shit. Go to the do-it-yourself, and get up under that bitch with the wand. Get the suspension, get the frame, be sure to rinse thoroughly inside crossmembers, frame horns, and fenderwells. Get the backside of skid plates. And guess what? You need to do it about every 3 days or so from then until the next good rain rinses the road salt away. Unless it sits during that period.

Or, you're gonna get rust.

Don't wanna deal with that? There's a lot of other planet you could move to.

Sorry. Northern winters are "harsh use" conditions for any vehicle. The only ways to fight harsh use are:

- Maintain the shit out of the vehicle (time consuming and expensive)
- Buy a piece of shit beater for $200 every winter (possibly unsafe, unreliable)
- Move (Time consuming an expensive, but solves the problem permanently)
- Let nature happen (Decreases your truck's shelf life, will result in early parts wear and replacement)

I see that on new trucks on the lot here in VT
My 06 had lots of surface rust from VT roads.
Did my best to treat the underneath & power wash.
A product I really like is Fluid Film.
Didn't seem to attract dirt because of the wax properties.
Anything without wax will attract dirt & make those springs squeak.
Sorry yeah that is what happens where we live.

Except your entire theory is thrown out the window, because Alberta doesn't use salt.

 

In alberta man anything metal on wheels gets eaten alive buy the damn salt... I just put in dakkar springs a month ago starting to rust already.

I'm going with something put down that's corrosive.

 

All of us who are obsessed with it spray paint the undercarriage on a regular basis. I have done it to all my vehicles. Change your oil and rust oleum the frame on the same day.

Otherwise the whole truck will look that way pretty soon.

 

Is that why Alberta has a road salt management plan?

Maybe they don't use it right where you live, but I'm sure it's out there in places.

Get some rust converting primer, then paint them black, the coat them w/ Amsoil Metal Protector, or some other wax based spray. I did it years ago and they and the rest of the underside is still black, and it can be blasted with water and the wax remains. I also took of the front skid-plate to get to other areas.

When I lived in Quebec ... my vehicles looked like rust buckets after the first salty winter ... no matter what rust proofing I did ...
