I love/hate this show. I like the technical talk, and what you can do when money isn't an issue.

But when they talk about "Well we can make this widget and save a ton of money without going to a vendor/dealership/etc..."

Yeah if you have a shop full of high end tools.

I wanna see them replace their entire shop with a trip to harborfreight/home depot. Give them a 600 dollar weldpak from home depot, a chicago electric right angle grinder, and a harborfreight shop press.

Take away the lifts and give them the regular guy budget. That would make it awesome.

"And here is where we have to make our 2nd pass over the root pass to get this 1/2inch welded up. I've unplugged the dryer to up the amps on the weldpak, and that's my wife screaming in the background.... "

It would be badass to have a regular guy show in someone's garage.

At least it's not All Girls Garage. That show has chicks in tight t-shirts and it's still unwatchable.

that would be a pretty funny idea! The guy has to improvise hard core to get things done because most people dont have a full shop. Like this V, thats funny!

I was really mad when the guy did a SAS on a chevy and covered the whole thing in under 3 minutes and made it sound like it was a weekend project!

It's a matter of the format/abbreviated/cutscenes of TV programming and a 20K-square-foot state-of-the-art shop versus "you can do the same thing at home with X." Yes, you could, but it would take 7 weeks of weekends instead of 7 hours, which has been edited down to .5 hours.

No, no I am not. Where do you get that from? In essence, I said it is the reality of TV programming constraints. Although I would watch unedited fabrication footage...if there weren't 3 million commercials.

I think the point is this: awesome show, but personally frustrating to watch in some ways, because the production does make it look so fast and easy. And "saving a ton of money" equates to "under the assumption you already have already spent a metric shitload of money on shop equipment."

 

I watched the video, and I understand what he's saying. He has to fit 10 days into 17 minutes and it has to follow a 23 episode format.

There are constraints that I'm not taking into account. But still. The incident I was referring to about the stock part was on the Super Dually on trucks last weekend. He was making a radiator support and had a set of punch dies and a very expensive hydraulic press to make this little 5 dollar support and was trying to make the point that he was saving a ton of cash in doing so. I love the shows, but sometimes.... I'm a little as to how I'm saving money when ordering a 5-10 dollar OEM part saves time and money in tools I can't afford.

Still I like Ian and I think his show is great.

 

They did a build in a two car, average garage type setup.

 

me and my brother know the guys who started/own/run the East Coast Offroad Racing Series (ECORS). they had a segment on there about 3 weeks ago. was cool to see the guys on tv that we got super hammered with a week before lol.
