rattling noise

I went to get in my truck today and noticed a stange noise from under the hood, it went away after awhile so i thought it wasnt a big deal. I went to drive home and heard some rattling outside the truck it went away after 10 secs, wastn sure if it actually came from the truck, i pulled in the garage and i could hear the rattling again, got out popped the hood and seems like it is coming from the front area of the engine, its doesnt get faster with more rpms. im not sure if it would be safe to drive to the dealership 40 miles away.

 

Check the clutch fan for play and tentioner pullys

 

sorry about the late reply, it ended up being the retention pulley. Said there is an upgrade for the 07, but no call for the 08, there going to change it anyways. the dealership tightened it for now.

 

I found the A/C tensioner idler pulley on my 2001 3.4 was going bad. I called the dealer and was told the part cost $38 and would take a few days to get. I removed the pulley and found the bearing was bad. I found a snap-ring holding the bearing to the pulley. I removed the snap-ring, and then used a bench vise and some large sockets to press out and install the new bearing
Since I could read a number on the bearing I called a local bearing supplier to check cost and availability. It was in stock and cost $11, be sure to use the same design and quality bearing. I’ve only put about 50 miles on my truck with the new bearing, it sure sounds better. I’d guess changing the bearing took me about 10 minutes more than it would take to swap the whole tensioner pulley with a new one. Since it saved me $25 bucks it was well worth the effort.

I have the same problem and the dealership thinks it is under the intake. What should check for on the tensioner pulley? Do I have to loosen the pulley and apply more tension to the belt?
