non-JBL to JBL Conversion Harness

I recently converted my 2005 non-JBL audio system to an 2011 JBL audio system w/external Amp & Sub. I also added an OEM Satellite (XM) Antenna, OEM Bluetooth Steering Wheel Controls & Microphone.

My primary reason for doing this was, to my knowledge, no one else ever has. That and the added challenge of achieving the goal without modifying the original harness. The resulting solution: a custom plug-n-play harness which plugs directly into an existing non-JBL harness.

The only additional wiring required is:
- 12VDC, 30A, fused circuit to power the amp (1 wire).
- Disconnect front door (6x9) speakers & wire separately (4 wires).

That's it!

Enabling XM, Bluetooth, AUX-IN &/or ASL may require additional wiring/hardware depending on your year. For example, in 09+ models, AUX-IN & ASL are already built-in and many of them already have an XM antenna/cable installed.

Below are two documents containing the data I compiled for this project. The first one contains the pinout/description for all connections involved. The 2nd is a list of part #s and a diagram portraying the general connectivity of the "adapter" harness. Feel free to ask questions.

About time! ha ha j/k I am glad you got it done. How did you end up getting the pins for the harness? Did you take a pictures of the install or harness?

 

Bought a complete wiring harness for a late model Yaris from eBay for $60. Had all the wire/terminals I needed (alot) plus a couple of the connector housings as well. I ordered the remaining housings (+BT-SWCs & Mic) from Town & Country Toyota (NC) who offers not only >=25% discounts but also $3 shipping on all orders.

Wife took a few pictures of my "bench test" with everything hooked-up but detail not apparent.

Incidently, if you ever decide you want to take advantage of your '09+ HU's built-in XM Tuner, you only need three things for your '05 Taco - an OEM antenna (color matched), a custom cable from VAISTech.com, and a subscription. BTW, if you ask for the "$77 Deal" (~50% off) they'll give it to you no questions asked - but you have to ask.

 

I will probably never follow in your footsteps.

Okay, here's a few shots of the harness just prior to installation.
Connectors shown are R1-A (JBL), R1-C, R2, S23 & S31.
S24 is not shown since all connections were done in vehicle.
The "loose-ends" were for connections to be done in the vehicle:

1. 3 wires w/terminals were inserted into R3 connector housing (for Mic).
2. 1 Red Wire was connected to SPD going to R3 (for ASL).
3. 2 White wires were connected to added 12VDC,30A,BAT circuit.
4. S24 was connected to Front speakers, SubWoofer & GND.

It's cool what you have done. I have an '05 non-jbl stereo in my single cab taco. I purchased a factory jbl 6 disc stereo. Is there an edited version of your diagram for this process? I assume it would be shorter, but, can't seem to place this in my mind. The 6 disc jbl I bought didn't have the harness. HELP !!

 

and the 6 disc was on an '08 double cab taco.

 

Sorry, the wiring/pinouts for the 05-08 JBL audio system are radically different from the 09+. My documentation focuses on 09+ JBL systems. This is because many desirable features were added (e.g.-AUX-IN, ASL, Bluetooth, XM Tuner, etc.).

Incidently, for any JBL system, you'll need the matching external amp as well.

Is there any sound difference from the non Jbl?

 

Yes, a dramatic difference. My wife has a brand new 4Runner yet always wants to take the Tacoma because of its "awesome sound system".
However, besides the JBL HU & Amp, some credit is due to better speakers as well. I used JBL GTO series (2 ohm) all around except for OEM sub.

As for myself, I must say, it's quite an improvement over the non-JBL. Wider dynamic range, greater presence, richer tone & deeper bass.
There are many detractors of the JBL on this forum but for the money (VERY LITTLE) I'm quite satisfied. Besides, I got an XM Tuner for free!

 

So for better or worse, I'm buying a JBL setup out of a 2011 Doublecab Tacoma that sounds like it's coming with HU/Speaker/Amp/Sub but probably no wiring. It will be going in my non-JBL 2008 Double-Cab.

I'll be up front, I'm stupid when it comes to car audio. I can wire you home up for multi-zone surround sound and install your spindle lift in about 2 hours, but the limit of my car audio knowledge is replacing stock head units with aftermarket utilizing store bought wiring kits.

So I ask, as it's obvious you have ALL the information right here, I'm just too stupid to 100% understand it, I just have to make the wiring harness that you made, and then disconnect the door 6x9's and presumably run new wires to "somewhere" probably the amp, and add a fuse? I will not be utilizing the bluetooth, XM that you've done btw.

How much did this cost? If I ask really, really nicely would you build the harness for me and charge me?! I'm deployed right now so I have time to figure out what all I'll need, but I'm wondering if I'm in over my head.

 

It would be ALOT easier if you can persuade the seller to sell you his connectors too. Ask him to cut them off with at least 3" of wire.

The alternative is you'll need to buy new connector housings, find a source for the terminal/wires (too expensive to buy new, see post #3), carefully remove the terminal/wires from the source connector (requires extremely tiny screwdriver & magnifying glass), select correct gauge for each signal, insert each terminal/wire in the correct pin of connector (using doc as guide).

Yes, except for "add a fuse". Specifically, you'll need to add a separate, 12VDC, 30A fused circuit to power the Amp. I simply ran a fused 10awg wire straight from my battery to the amp. Used chassis for GND.

Since you have speakers & don't want XM or BT, only the following costs apply:

$ 60 - Yaris Wiring Harness (for terminal/wires)
$ 40 - Connector Housings
$ 50 - 2011 JBL HU, Amp & Sub

Since I wanted better speakers, XM & BT, I incurred the following additional costs:

$140 - JBL GTO 638 (5.25") & 938 (6x9)
$100 - Bluetooth SW Controls
$100 - Bluetooth Mic
$ 80 - ********* HDP Speaker Baffles/Mounts
$ 80 - Custom XM Antenna Cable
$ 50 - OEM XM Antenna

During the winter I may have considered it but with the warmer weather comes all of the "house" projects - which is a lengthy list this year.

Hey Thanks man, and I feel you on house projects! Wife and I will be buying a second house in a couple months, inevitably things will need upgraded! Maybe I'll talk to my brother, he's an EE, make him do some work for a change. Also might look for a totaled vehicle wiring harness, probably close to impossible to locate but worth the shot. Lastly I'll see if I can get the connectors off the seller, sounds like he might be using them or something, not sure for what? Another $100 or so isn't bad, he'll the JBL upgrade was like $960 stock IIRC. It will work fine for my listening needs, as I'm not 16 anymore! Thanks again for the guidance!

So is getting the Yaris wiring harness the best way to get the ends and everything or are people using something else? Seller needs the wiring ends, so I'm SOL. No big deal, I know I can figure this out eventually, and my google-fu is strong enough I can probably find a totaled vehicle harness on the internet from Africa!

 

Most likely any late model Toyota wiring harness will have the majority of Terminal/Wires you'll need. You may even get lucky with a couple of the Connector-Housings though for the most part you'll probably end up buying them new.

Also, on a previous project, I bought a engine fusebox for a Toyota Echo off eBay for $25 that had all its connectors w/wires attached. That was a treasure trove of Connector-Housings and Terminals/Wires as well.

The real trick is finding something that's cheap. That's part of the fun/challenge. Those deals are out there and eBay is usually a good place to find them.
