What should I look for when shopping for used headunits?

I'm looking at buying a used factory head unit for my 99 Tacoma, just wanted to know what I should look for, like signs of disrepair or damage. I found one on Craigslist yesterday and am going to look at it later, what should I look for while im inspecting it. I post a link to the CL add below and would appreciate any helpful advice

I thought the factory unit for that year included the cd player with it as one unit? That's how my 2000 radio was.

 

I've seen the one your taking about, my dad has an 01 single cab and its the same as this one,but there going for double the price, all I need is the casset player because im gonna use the casset iPod hookup.

His is a 5 lug btw

 

Have you used the cassette adapters? I have and hate them, I bought a ~120 dollar Sony with iPod/usb hookup and loved it. Yes it is more expensive, but it is new technology.

Yea I use to use them when I would drive my. Moms old Camry a while back, I actually just bought a head unit from best buy along with a few other things but I need money to replace a laptop that just crapped out on me. I still haven't installed it so im gonna return it. It would just be something to hold me over for a bit until I get some money to buy a good one

 

Oh, well in that case I would ask if you could install it on site, make sure everything works, then pay.

 

Update.
So I bought the headunit, it was originally on a 01 5 lug, so today I got around to trying to install it but ran into a problem. I plugged in all the cables that were visible in my truck and it fired up right away, but I can't seem to get the headunit to fit in the damn space where its suppose to go. I'm wondering, do I have to dismantle part of the dashboard to get it to fit properly. I took a picture to try to better explain the problem im having.

Now I have no clue what I am going to recommend considering I don't have any experience with Taco radios....


BUT
for most stock radios I believe you have to do some dash taking apart to get them in and out (my Jetta did, and most Scubies do)

 

Is it just the center stack trim holding you back (it comes off), or is there a clearance issue behind the thing? I'm looking for a factory radio too, as this Alpine unit that came with the truck, while is compatible with sat, mp3, ipods, etc, is so freakin' small to read, and you need 3 hands to change the station!

 

I have no experience swapping out headunits in the Tacoma so take it FWIW...

but don't you have to remove the trim surrounding the head unit first in order to get the head unit in there and mount it?

So after I found out that the head unit worked I kind of put off installing it but today I finally got around to it. Heres how it looks

Only down side to installing it was finding out my speakers sucked! If they go over a certain volume all you can hear is static. So that's next on my list. With that said... any one have any recommendations?

 

Honestly at this point if I were you, I'd be a new head unit and new front speakers.

For those of us not trying to win competitions, $300-350 will get you a really nice sound.

 

oh and btw -

wtf is up with the diagram telling you to use both defrost settings with the recirculate mode?

I understand it makes sense to do so, and always have myself, but I don't have that diagram

 

i have a double din radio with cd player out of my 2000 if you're interested. I replaced it cause I wanted an aftermarket radio to put subs in.
