Small Crack in Windshield, What to do?

Shucks, I've only got 12k miles and I've got a 1/8" hairline crack in my windshield. I know these can spider web after some time and with weather/temperature changes, so I'd better nip this in the bud.

What have you boys done?

some service centers like jiffy lube fix em for free, but they also sell kits at autoparts stores...it's pretty easy to do it yourself.

 

find a window repair company. Will fill the crack with epoxy and should be OK..

Just had my wife's repaired. was 100 bucks and if we have to replace window they will subtract the 100 from the replacement cost.

Safelite is $100 min. Too much for such a small crack.

I just watched a couple of DIY videos on YouTube. Looks easy enough, especially since mine is uber small. I'll try my local O'Reilly's.

 

Wait until is a real crack and replace the glass. It eventually will crack further.

 

There's all kinds of free rock chip repair places around my area, they also do small cracks. It's free on most insurance companies.

 

Glass repair kit. Drill a small hole at the very tip of the crack and fill with the resin. Once cured it will stop the crack from spreading in that direction. Did a few on my old car and they're still holding strong. A few star shaped dings and a 3" by 3" L-shaped crack near my inspection sticker. I didnt bother filling the cracks in, just stopping them from spreading.

 

I was driving on the freeway once and a stone bounced out of a semi that didn't have a tarp. When it hit the pavement right in front of me I had one of those "oh shit...dammit" moments. The company paid for a new windshield and to have the my car professionally detailed to get all the glass out.

 

Just fixed both of my parents windshields, cost insurance 60 for the scubie with one bad chip, and 60 for the Tundra with 2 chips

 

Get the crack filled! I had a small crack in mine, went off roading and then up to arrowhead (single digit temps) and the crack ran the length of my windshield. Better to fill it then have to replace the whole windshield!!!

 

Find an autoglass repair place and have them patch it. They can do it if it's smaller than quarter size (for a star) or less than 6" (for a crack). Someone said Safelite won't do it for less than $100 but they did a $50 star fix on mine and for a repair my insurance waives the deductible so I paid $0 out of pocket.

Sadly, I then had 2 more rocks hit my windshield in the following 3 weeks and had to get it replaced anyway, and that cost me $265 out of pocket (the entire cost of the windshield) because a completely new windshield is covered under comprehensive and I have a $500 deductible.

And you wouldn't believe my awful luck this winter. 3 weeks after getting a new windshield? Another &%*^# rock hit the damned windshield. This one landed above the sweep of the wipers on the passenger side though, and with the circular crack pattern I think it will stay out of my line of vision. And in that case, it's staying there for a while.

 

Have you checked w/your ins co? I call mine and get it replaced. Costs nothing out of pocket but time in SC where the covg is built in with zero deductible.

back in feb. i just pick up my brand new truck. On my way home from the dealership a rock hit my winshield took a couple days to get fixed but all most looks brand new now

 

I have Geico and satellite cams out and fixed a 1 in crack in my windshield for free. You can barely see it now.

 

I have State Farm and they covered my chip repair for free. Call your agent and double check with them, if they cover it the can also provide you with a repair place. Took 10 minutes for the pro to repair and i know the job was done right, no problems after a year.

 

I have one on the same side as this picture. It's just a spider crack. I talked to a windshield company and they said there isn't any point, once they put any pressure on it's going to spread. They said just leave it until it goes into my vision and then change it. I've had it since December and it hasn't moved, knock on wood lol.

 

I'm glad to say that all mine was a rock coming from a semi trailing the other way. I wouldn't want to have whatever you had come at your window comes towards me.
