freeze plug tricks wanted

    I need to replace the center freeze plug on passengers side of my 97 tacoma v6 any tricks appreciated.

    welcome to tw.

    if you have room......small flat tip screwdriver and rubber mallet or hammer to get the freeze plug out..........then a socket about as big around as the freeze plug to get the new one back in. use a little grease on the lip of the new freeze plug. hopefully this will help you out.

    Getting it out shouldn't be too difficult, drain the coolant, use a punch to drive one side in, channel-lock it out.

    For a replacement the easiest way to go is a generic replacement one. They have a rubber washer squeezed between two big washers, and a little handle you turn. Get one close to the right size, stick it in, crank the little handle until it's good and tight. NAPA stores should be able to help you with one. Advance Auto and Autozone, well you might just get a blank stare from them.

    If you were up where it gets cold I'd suggest putting in a block heater...but in Texas, nah.

    the center freeze plug is located behind the motor mount has anyone replaced this one. how would i hold the motor steady, hoist,jack stands,jack screws etc. i'm trying to replace it without pulling the motor! is it possible?

    i'll trade you an idea if the freeze plug on rear of head on drivers side goes out
    shop over a grand to fix
    2 1/2 inch hole saw through firewall by gas pedal 50 cents!
    replace with liquid nails
