Fuel Additive

My dad gave me a bottle of Star Tron Fuel Enzyme treatment to try out. He's been running it in his bike and any other small engine he has and they all fired right up this spring, no carb issues. I gave it a shot in my motorcycle and it seems to really be working. The bike doesn't pop anymore and seems to rev smoother through the RPM range. Here's the product:

You know, I live high up north, I've never used fuel additives for storage, I always just make sure I'm drained half a tank, then put fresh gas in during the spring before start up. I wonder what difference it'd make

 

I never used to use additives but this ethanol has been hell on small engines. I'm on my third carb for my lawn mower and the snow blower and motorcycle always run really really rough after sitting for a few months and sometimes take some 'coaxing' to get them to fire.

Why do you drain them to 1/2 tank for storage? You should keep the tank either full for storage otherwise you can get condensation in the tank and rust buildup. Rust won't form on the inside of a full fuel tank and little to no air space means you can't get condensation either.

Give this stuff a shot though, it's not overly expensive, my old man swears by it and is making a believer out of me also.

 

Hmm... never thought of that. I don't "Drain" them per say, I just time my fill ups so I'll be able halfway through the gas when it comes time for storage. The condensation rust issue never crossed my mind..

 

I have found in my research that unless your fuel is sitting for more than a month, there is no need for additives. However, small engines, boats, bikes, ATVs are supposed to benefit greatly. I always question mechanics and have had four different boat mechanics say to use it in every tank for the boat or risk gelling of ethanol, deteriorating lines and a premature carb rebuild. I don't know shit though. This is just what I have heard. I have seen no scientific evidence that it helps, but I don't want toscrew my boat, so I use it.

 

I agree with you 100%. I don't use additives in my truck but have been using them in my lawn mower, snow blower and motorcycle. The ethanol doesn't seem to mess with the bigger engines but played hell with the smaller ones. I was using this stuff called K100 and it seemed to help somewhat but the bike would still run rough, the mower and snow blower would still start really hard after sitting so it was helping but wasn't doing anything spectacular (plus it was expensive). This new stuff was given to my dad by his local mechanic and he tested it in all his engines around the house and started seeing great results. Lawnmowers and string trimmers all fired up 2nd pull after sitting all winter which never happened in the past. He then passed it on to me and I saw the same results. My motorcycle hasn't run this good since they started putting ethanol in at the pumps. This stuff is also a lot less expensive than the other additives which is kind of surprising. Something that actually works I would have expected to be expensive.

Short version, I'm not a salesman for the stuff, I just wanted to pass along my positive experience with a product

 

I'll have to try the K100. I've had good luck with the Startron stuff but a comparison would be good. After reading another post, I'm gonna save a few glass jars and do a three month comparison. Untreated, treated with Startron and treated with another. Be interesting to see the difference.

 

K100 is easier to find since it seems to be on the shelves at most auto parts stores. The difference is Startron is much cheaper and takes an ounce to treat 8 gallons where as K100 costs a lot more and takes I think 3 ounces per 8 gallons. I'd be curious to see a comparison also!
