So I know there have been a few threads about quitting smoking but not really based around ex-smokers and smokers offering advice, experiences and support for each other.

I just quit smoking cold turkey Tuesday the 17th after smoking for 11 years.. I guess I just realized I am not getting any younger, healthier or prettier unless I make some changes.

I also want to tell anyone that has not head of it about a book that I am currently reading! Its called the easy way to quit smoking. My friend passed it on to me after she quit smoking after reading the book.

to quit smoking? or spending money on smoking? :D

edit: if i remember weekend before last i gave you a few :anonymous:

why do you think most drug addicts are broke? because addiction trumps money. In the situation where I had to choose financially between eating, putting gas in my car and smoking I chose smoking every time.

ya agreed, the kind of shit i see on peoples x-rays sometimes is just disgusting, that and old people coughing up black shit. never surprises you though after they're done with their exam you'll see them right back out side smoking even after being told their lungs are half full of tar and other shit

I started this thread so that people who are currently struggling with smoking can come for support.. not so people that do not smoke can wonder why people still smoke.. its simple, its nicotine addiction. This thread is to offer some kind words and encouragement to our fellow TW members that struggle with this...

Either way, thank you for reading and posting.

EDIT: the man that smokes after finding out its killing him continues to smoke because we are brainwashed to believe that we can not handle stress with out smoking. He is most likely terrified and feels trapped and helpless, he feels there is no way out of this addiction that is killing him. I promise you he has always known the health risks and has tried to quit numerous times only to be left more frustrated. Its very sad..

I really don't smoke all that often but I do associate smoking with things (like certain cold beverages). And I am a waiter at a high end restaurant during the summer and I don't get any breaks unless it is a smoke break, so I smoke a cig so I can have a break after a 8 hour shift heading into another long shift.

EDIT: What I meant to say is that I know smoking is bad and I want to stop, but anytime I am doing certain things I always want a cig and I don't really want to stop doing those things.

x2 I bartended in college and the only excuse we had to go outside and stand around for a few minutes is to smoke a cig. Otherwise i dont see how to justify to my boss "Hey, im gonna go outside and stand around for a few minutes, watch people walk by, is that cool?"

Screw that... I used to be a waiter at a place like that and I went and sat out back with the smokers every 3 - 4 hours just to take a break. I don't smoke, never have but I figured if they got to take breaks, I was going to also

Best of luck to everyone trying to quit!! :bananadance:

Just quit myself 11 weeks ago today. Was a pack a day smoker for 8 years, and probably a half a pack a day for the 5 years before that. Trust me, if I can do it, so can you. I LOVE TO SMOKE. Always have, always will, but don't want to take an early dirt nap because of it.

    Some advice I can give:
    - It gets easier with time.
    - To be successful in quiting smoking, one really needs to want to quit. For me, once I made the decision to quit, it was not too bad. Yes, there are times when I want one, and I don't think that ever goes away, but it gets easier knowing you don't want to go back.
    - It helped me to mentally prepare for it for a few weeks leading up to it. I prepared mentally, and getting some nicorette gum in case I needed nicotine (but have not had one piece of that).
    - Within a couple weeks of quiting, my lungs already felt better, and my stamina during sex has gotten better.
    - It helps to have a support group of friends that will encourage you, and it may be easier to avoid those that smoke for awhile. I know I will not be going to Vegas any time soon.
    - Don't give excuses like I read above about taking breaks at work. I still, and so can you, take breaks at work and not smoke. Instead of standing around the smokers, I like to walk around. I find that walking around, even around the parking lot, helps me to clear my head like a smoke would.
    - Also, think of the ones that love and care for you, and you won't smell like an ass-tray.

Best of luck, YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!

Hi, first off hello to everyone, this is my first post on TW.
    I smoked for 14 years, from age 14 to 28, I quit about 1 1/2 years ago.
I know it's very hard for people who have not been addicted to smoking (or anything else) to understand why people keep doing something that is unhealthy, makes you smell, doesn't taste good, deteriorates your body quicker than normal, etc. etc. etc. But let me tell you first hand that addiction to cigarrettes is a B*tch. I consider myself a somewhat smart, strong willed person and I struggeled for years trying to quit, I tried different methods (e-cigarrete, cold turkey, gradually reducing qty of cigarrettes per week) with negative results. It is very frustrating when you know you are doing something that doesn't make sense or provides any personal benefit and can't stop doing it.
The method that worked for me was the book "THE EASY WAY TO STOP SMOKING" as the OP mentioned in the original post, I highly recommend it.

Thank you OP for creating this thread.

I was a 1 1/2 - 2 pack a day smoker but have now been smoke-free for almost 17 years. I used Nicorette gum to help me quit. Even though I no longer smoke, I still get the urge every now and then. I don't think that ever stops. The biggest thing about quitting is that you have to really want to quit. You have to do it for yourself, not for anyone else. Good luck to all who are struggling.

Great book. I read it and passed it on to a friend who also read it and quit smoking. I smoked for 14 years, and quit 6 years ago with help from the patch and that book. Don't be afraid to use the patch if you follow it by the letter it helps a great deal, specially if you have a stressful job as I do. One more thing that I did daily was visit this site:
    http://www.quitnet.com/qnhomepage.aspx
Sign up and chat/forum with 1000's of other people quitting also. Great support group. Good luck, although you wont need it if you want to quit.

I think people are different in that regard, as I never have a craving for a cigarette now and actually despise them.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
That all depends on where you live. I can still get Marlboro's for under $5 bucks a pack here. When I was in NY last weekend the exact same pack was $9.78.

Check my build thread...too much to list.
Congrats, keep it up! I've been smoking for almost 7 years now total. The longest break I've had was 6 months. Picked it back up because at work there was no break unless it was a smoke break. I'll look into that book you recommended. Recently I've noticed even more so how smoking feels like a chore and I'm no longer enjoying it. Not to mention how much it cost to smoke. Good luck and stay strong!
