Just got a 2006 V6 4x4 w/TRD Sport package

Did a test drive on Saturday and bought it on Sunday. Love the way it looks and drives. Not new to Toyota, but new to Tacoma. Joined this forum to learn everything I can. Already reviewed the MPG Mod list and with gas over $4/gal, I'll be making a few changes right away!

Not very deep I'm afraid. Payments start hitting me next month. I'm hoping to pick up pointers here on getting the most bang for my buck. I'm starting with an AFE air filter and maybe a tailgate net to try and get the MPG up.

Start learning. Neither the drop-in filter nor driving with the tailgate down will make a difference in MPG.

Some users report improved MPGs running 91 octane fuel, often enough to offset 91 octane's higher prices depends on local pricing. It's something you can experiment.

 

better driving habits and maybe a street thread tire are your best bets for MPG.

I drive like I stole it and i have larger mud terrains.. I still get the average MPG for my truck.

will your off roading require you to invest into a rear locker?

Since the sport package is lacking that.

I think you can swap the offroad package rear for yours and wire the switch to existing wires.

 

Where in nor cal you at?

 

An RLD is not in my near future. Too much money for now. From what I've been reading the TRD Sport package is still pretty capable with the LSD.

I will need to buy new tires in the next year or so, so I will look into a tire tread that might improve the MPG a bit. I still want to be able to go off-road so may have to find a good compromise.

Welcome! I've got a super white sport myself. I would recommend Wrangler Silent Armours in terms of new tires. They have a pretty good tread pattern for light off roading, do pretty well in snow and rain, and ride very smooth. Really, it's an excellent tire that balances street/highway driving as well as snow/mud/off road. I'd love to have Duratracs or BFG's but I am not impressed as far as their street performance and the slight loss of MPG's.

Wouldn't be optimistic. From your photo, you got BFG Rugged Trail tires (likely from an OEM TRD Off Road model). Those tires are actually highway tires, lightweight (37 lb) and give good fuel economy. Off-road they are crap. You likely won't be able to find another tire that gives better MPGs. And if you go with an all-terrain tire, milage can easily turn worse...

 

Get the stock size 265/70/16 or equivalent in 17 rim size BFG all terrains, they were quiet on the highway and were pretty decent for mild offroading. and most of all didn't really affect MPG.

 

Yeah, you are right about the tires that came with it. When I do buy a new set, I'll probably end up with something similar or even a bit more aggressive (after all, I bought it for the dirt too). Right now I am just getting a baseline on MPG, trying the driving style suggested here. I can live with 20 MPG if I can get there that way.

BTW, I was puzzled that this truck has 16 inch Toyota rims. The TRD Sport has stock 17 inch and my original sticker lists 17 inch as well. I don't really care that much as long as it doesn't affect anything else. Do you think it makes much of a difference?

 

I will keep those in mind when I go tire shopping. When you say mild off-roading are you talking steep hills, mud, or both? I would probably never take this on a black-diamond trail or anything close to that (at least until it's paid off), but I live right next-door to the Sierra Nevada and I can't wait to explore some trails up there
