TRD sport suspension mod for on road performance

It seems like all they have is lift kits for Tacoma. What about suspension mods for a 4wd TRD Sport that wants to stay a sport? I'm talking about sway bars, shocks springs, poly bushings, whatever. I can't find anything for some reason. Am I on the wrong forum all together?

 

You can add a rear sway bar to help with the corners. I know you said you don't want to lift but Eibach coils are a great addition for the front. They're a stiffer coil and only lift you 1.5". They hardly roll at all in corners and virtually eliminate brake dive.

Bilstein 5100's can be used with stock coils and really do help smooth out the ride. They also seem to be firmer than stock billies for a better on road ride.

Other than that, you can attack braking upgrades with stainless steel brake lines and better pads.

Most people on here buy a taco for off-road use.

Both Helwig and Addco make a rear anti-sway bar for Tacoma. Addco is cheaper ($125), Helwig ($240). Bilstein 4600 shocks may be what you are looking for. They are not the same as your TRD/Bilsteins.

If you have not done the Rear Spring TSB, consider it. It will add a extra leaf to your rear springs and stiffen your suspension. One thing that I considered doing was using front coils taken from a V6 Double Cab on my Regular cab. I have not decided the value of this as yet for my application.

Poly Bushings are available. I will look and find who has them.

I do not know what tires you have on your Sport, but Dunlops came on my Regular cab and I trashed them before they got me killed. I installed Michelin LTX M/S2s. There was a tremendous difference in handling.

I agree with you. I am trying to build the truck that Toyota was supposed to have built for hauling and as a road worthy daily driver. I live on a back road that only is accesible by 4X4, 4 months of the year. We find cars in the ditch when the snow melts in spring.

 

Thanks for the info guys. I like the idea of poly bushings and rear sway bar. I'm still looking into the TSB for the rear springs. My last truck was a 2007 double cab trd sport and it could easily pull 20 bags of top soil that weigh 40 pounds each. Ive done that several times. That's 800 pounds and I have had a half yard of stone in the bed once and that weighs over 1000 pounds. It was not on the bump stops. I'm not sure why I'm reading about guys towing 400-500 pounds and resting on the bump stops. I thought these trucks cargo capacity was over 1000.

 

I have a 2007 and replaced the suspension twice. Once was the TSB, the second time I replaced the leaf pack and used an AAL because the stock springs were junk. I couldn't haul a 400 lb bike without hitting the bump stops at every bump. Maybe you got lucky but I'm not a fan of the stock suspension.

If you want, you can get a custom leaf pack to stiffen up the rear and put you at whatever ride height you wish.

No, the lifts that go spring under to spring over usually have a replacement leaf pack. Spring under with the soft leaf packs that we have has got to put you on the bump stops very frequently!

 

Do the 5100's lift the truck, or can you keep it's stock height? I'm always looking for better road handling. What about the Bilstein HD? I also want to replace the leaf springs for 4-leaf similar to Toyota TSB, but aftermarket. I don't want to lower it, though!

 

im using 4x4 leafs in a spring under configuration. i have no problems.

the concerns i have with that kit do not lie with the inverted leafs; just the rear shackle flip is sketch as fk. do not like

and the front setup, which is pretty much an non-adjustable coilover sleeve, will only compress the strut, and not really help with handling. the ride will probably stiffen due to the compressed strut but that does not equal better handling per say.

The 5100's have 4 settings, 0 or stock, .85, 1.75 and 2.5" of lift so yes, you can use 5100's at stay at stock height. Bilstein HDs seem to have a good reputation also, they will keep you at stock height and do not have the ride height options that the 5100's have.

For aftermarket leaf springs that keep you at stock height, check out companies like Alcan. They can make you a custom leaf pack at whatever ride height you choose and can beef them up to hold more weight if you choose. They're a little pricey though.
