To actually answer the OP's actual question, the only thing worthwhile for the second gen i4 is the URD supercharger. If you drop your 4 grand, you'll get about the same rwhp as the v6's in boost, and if you want, you can upgrade to stage 2 later for another 30+rwhp.

Still doesn't get you that low-end torque, but it'll get up and go much better.

You certainly can also look at the v6. Now that you've bought the truck though, you'll want to run the numbers... You may be surprised at how much you'll lose in depreciation on your current truck, and when that is tacked onto the cost of a new v6, the supercharger may begin to look pretty cheap in comparison. ;)

But the v6 has the cool chrome emblem :D

URD dyno'd the S/C 2.7 at 248 HP to the wheels, which is more than the 4.0.

My 09 dbl cab has plenty of power for my needs. If you are pulling a heavy load or hauling a heavy load you need to move up to a full size trk. My Taco has more get up & go than my Ford Ranger ever thought about having. Never bu a I4 unless you are strictly looking for mpg. I average 19-20mpg regularly, i'm pleased with my Taco.

Urd dyno'd MY setup at 248. ;-) smaller pulley/cat delete vs the stage 1 kit. Still I would go urd, just clarifying.

Np. If you can swing the 4k, its night and day. Otherwise go ahead and upgrade, cuz nothing else is worth it.

I have a 4banger double cab and honestly dont have a problem with my horse power. I switch it to lower gears to get RPMs higher when I need the torque( going up steep hill, cutting someone off [haahah sometimes], and when im hauling something)

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I dont really have any trouble with mine but it is a 5 speed, I remember test driving a 2.7 auto and was like "wow what a turd hurst" but with the manual for passing just drop it into 4th and shift to 5th halfway through and there is all of the passing power you need, around town 3rd and 4th gear are my friends, especially 3rd. The URD supercharger is a good option and will boost you up to 211hp, the V6 is only about 236hp. If I was in your position though I would trade for a V6, save lots of stress.

211 rwhp. V6 is 208-ish rwhp (as opposed to flywheel, where it is 236.)

Silly question: Are you winding this engine up? Or are you worried about hurting it by running it at 4-5K rpm?

My work truck is a 5 lug 2.7. It's a 5 speed regular cab, but it's loaded down pretty heavy and the weight is probably comparable to a double cab with a couple of people in it. It does fine, but I use 3rd gear A LOT on the highway when it starts getting hilly.

We have one 2.5 mile long, 7% grade that I drive up regularly. My V6 truck cruises up at 70 mph with the transmission in 6th gear. The four banger goes up at 70 without too much hassle, but it's turning 4400 rpm in 3rd. I really don't believe it's hurting the truck, it's a little loud, but smooth and does not sound like it's in distress.

When I first got the work truck, I thought it was gutless, but I wasn't yet willing to run it up to 55 mph in second gear to merge on the freeway. Since I stopped worrying about hurting it, I actually enjoy driving it as much as I do my personal truck. They are two different animals, but both work great.
