    Pics or it didn't bend!:p

Yeah, that's kind of like the faster you travel, time slows down. I wonder how much younger those pilots are at the end of their careers...

Speaking of jet pilots...National Geographic had some show on last night where a group is given a number of clues that should help them identify an individual. I didn't see the beginning but I think they have a fixed amount of time to find the person. Anyway, it was fascinating. Last night's subject holds the record for high speed ejection from an aircraft-800mph. Sadly, his back seater did not make it and he was pretty severely injured (arms dislocated at the shoulders, broken legs/ankles). He is currently a pilot with Southwest and pilots stunt planes on the side.

Like if one person is looking at a clock from up close and another really far away. Since we see reflections of light, say that person was far enough that the light he was seeing had the time of 1200 where the closer person saw the light of 1201, (obviously with the speed of light and strength of our eyes this isn't possible, but hypothetically) what time really is it? 1200 or 1201...? I hate philosophy

No, this is not the same thing as the vapor clouds that form because of humidity. This is an actual shockwave caused, you'll see two, one around the canopy, and one at the stabilizers.

Also, you can watch this amazing video and see it in action.

Not sure Brian if you thought I was talking about the same thing. I used to have a poster with the cloud forming, and I've seen it happen on TV when watching a documentary.

What I was mentioning was the test scientists did in the 60s or 70s where they took an atomic clock up on a plane and flew around the world. When they landed, they compared it to the atomic clock on the ground that it was synced with. The one that traveled at high speed around the world had slowed down and was running behind compared to the stationary clock. I've heard that the closer to the speed of light you travel, time slows almost to a stop.

FYI, I wasn't really talking about what you were talking about... I just wanted to state the vapor thing since I knew I would get that response.

Well, theoretically time is light.... if you could travel faster than light, go out a few hundred light years into the galaxy and look back, you would actually be looking back in time. The same theory for astronomers when they see supernovas.... they assume that, at a given distance, it happened decades ago, or maybe even centuries.

Makes complete sense to me, but I've never seen that experiment. I want to read up now :D

    Brian and Moose,
There was an interesting PBS show "Nova" that had a three part series hosted by some fancy bestselling author physicist, who surprisingly wasn't Neil DeGrass Tyson. In one of the episodes he explained in a dumbed down enough way for me to understand why time slows down when you approach the speed of light.
But I don't remember why, I was either drunk or couldn't sleep.

Thanks Mike. That got me searching. In my search, I came across a page that talked about the experiment in the 70s I mentioned above.

Brian, here you go. It talks about it in the section titled An Historic Flight.

Had my alternator die at a stoplight earlier, definitely not something I felt like bothering with today.
