My God man! I remember when I first rode my buddy's R1. I couldn't believe those engines didn't redline until like 13000 RPM. Even Dodge Vipers redline at like 8500. But this guy has his Tacoma motor so well balanced and polished that he can rev in excess of 45000 RPMs. I'm impressed. That's like 8 times the stock redline.

Whipper you've got a great amount of perseverance. I never got "butt hurt" lol obviously there are things I am not deeply knowledged in. I honestly don't care and haven't ever since you opened your mouth. I like my parts they are fun. I mean let's think about this, I don't even know you so I really could care less about what you have to say. Sure your knowledge is greater when it comes to trucks but everybody has their preference of knowledge. I hope you and your Taco enjoy hundreds of thousands of miles together :) I'm going to enjoy mine.

Modern engines dont "strain" to pull in air. Infact, Air intakes from the mid 90's, on up, have been tuned to use the intake pulses for the engines benafit (Much like exhaust scavenging), thus the term "TUned Port" came to light. Air filters are largely invisable to the engine. They can flow 400% (or more) air than the engine is even capable of inhaling at WOT. To add to this, Air filter construction has improved, allowing the air to flow more efficiently thru the media, while remaining restrction free. Imagine this.....Cut both ends off a 5# coffee can (the ones that are about 6" in diameter", and breath thru it. Does it affect your breathing? No. Now.....do the same thing with a trash can. Any improvement? Nope. In our engines, each combustion chamber fills one at a time. The egnine isnt sucking 4 liters of air in at once. It sucks in 40 cubic inches of air (Assuming 100% efficiency), per cylinder, every other crank rotation (4 stroke). And while Im up on this box.....Another reason people comment on things like this, is this.......We are all very passionate about our trucks. We have a good idea of what works well, and what is a waste of money. Those of us that have time invested, and money wasted on bullshit mods, tend to want to help others, and prevent them from making the same mistakes. Its called "Helping".

But if I breath through a garbage can I'll still get 1-3 MPG better right? ;)

I have no experiance with the Tundra Engine, so I cant say how one thing will affect it. Comparing results from a different engine to another is silly. All I know is the engines I have messed with, a simple intake change didnt do too much. Another thing about the K&N's is they filter for shit. If you live in a dusty environment, your oil samples will show dirt in the oil. K&N might be the "inovator" of the performance air filter, but keep in mind, most all race vehicles have their engines torn down after a race or two. Most 1/4 vehicles dont even run filters. Anyway, If you want to run the K&N filters, by all means, go right ahead. You couldnt pay me to run one.

    This. ^^^^^

In the many engines I have had the chance to fuck with, I have never seen an intake make that much of a difference.

OP. Too many people on Tacomaworld disregard improvements, unless they are for off road. Lol. Filters don't increase or decrease flow or MPG. Despite the fact that there is recorded proofs of difference. Whether by individuals of established facilities.

If you really want to get to the bottom of it for yourself, you have to do something extreme. Far spectrum say between clean and dirty.

I know for a fact that the filter on my car has been proven to make the boost threshold on my truck delay over 500 rpms. Also, tested on a car it has caused a loss in two mpg. (That was from stock, to the filter, then to a new filter of the same kind, but clean and it picked up a back up the mpg lost but the car was able to accelerate more quickly after the new filter. ) < So it didn't actually gain any mpg over stock, but was per drivers words able accelerate faster, which means a gain in hp.

And alas, it is now on my car. I have noticed a two MPG loss as well. But until I get a new filter to replace it, it will have to do, as the factory stuff was falling apart misserably.

The point is, that this particular filter had become so dirty and clogged, while it was used for my rear mount tuebo kit, despite three or four cleanings, it still does not flow well enough to allow easy of breathing for the engines. Whether boosted or not. There is a definite flow restriction. Compare it to breathing through a pillow, versus a sheet. The same physics still apply. It's a fucking clogged filter. It can't flow well.

That would be on the far opposite end from clean and free flowing. Versus a test of something nominally dirty.

Funny thing about that whole air filter spill, is that you never see someone debate anything about the differences between a free flowing fuel filter and one that is not free flowing. Whether it be clogged, to fine micron filtration, or what not. Although the same principles apply there.

So. Either take off your intake/exhaust and then do before and after dynos, or look up Southwest Research out of San Antonio, and get lost in all of their amazing data for cars and trucks of all makes and models.

There is a simple saying that would best describe this in ohms law. "energy will follow the path of least resistance." This saying is true for many, many things. If there is a restriction point (in this case clean vs dirty not filter materiel) , it is harder to overcome. Simple fact.

Path of least resistance isn't part of ohm's law.

But in the case of mpg, the path of most resistence is the restriction through the throttle plate, not the air filter.
