Defective paint

Any other Tacoma owners having issues with their paint?

Paint is crap on all newer vehicles.

 

Welcome...And what kind of "issues." Chips are common because of the primer and thickness of the paint. There are some spots that have an orange peel like chip protector that can look like bubbles if you aren't familiar with it. If you don't wash it-It will be dirty.

So what is the problem you are having?

 

Here is a pic of my Tacoma's paint problem.

 

Maybe someone threw some acid on it.

 

That's a lot of damage to have occurred via normal "wear and tear" to a 2005 Tacoma. I have a 2006 that has sat outside every day and it still looks almost new.

It almost looks to me like someone dumped a bunch of paint stripper on it. Maybe your wax brand had something to do with it?

 

Looks like a repaint with a primer issue.

 

I was thinking brake fluid. How quick did this happen? and how long after it first started till it looked like the picture?

Dang OP - I thought you were gonna show some pics of bubbles or orange peel or something like that. Instead it looks like an acid bath. That's not something others have issues with, esp a '10. You buy new or used? CarFax?

 

Someone put something bad on the roof,,, Thats not everyday ware or paint fade

 

Nothing was spilled on it. I live in So.Cal. I wax my truck often using McGuire's Wax. When it first started to break down it looked like there was some sort of spider web cracking going on. Took it down to Toyota and the service manager there said that another Tacoma had come in with the same problem. It took 9 months for the paint to peel down to the metal.

I bought the truck brand new. Was very proud of it and paid a lot of money for it. Very unhappy Toyota won't even reply to my email.

 

First off don't send an email, you need to call them. Think about how many emails they get a day.

 

I think if that I'd bought the truck new and that happened that quickly - I'd be after Toyota too. It'd be another thing if you bought it used and didn't know the history. For example if it had been damaged and repainted. But as the original owner you know the history and you've got a certain amount of extra clout with Toyota.

But you're going to have to be persistent.

You remember that whole Pickup truck paint issue from around 1985 to around 1988 thing?? You're probably too young. An entire generation of trucks had paint start to peel because manufacturers changed the primer/painting technique.

Anyhow, thankfully it's not that widespread; you seem to have a fairly isolated problem. (Lots of folks come to TW with their various truck complaints, and we just haven't seen very many paint complaints.)

Write angry letters and phone calls. Keep after them. Don't take no for an answer. But ultimately, what you're going to get offered is *partial* payment towards a new paint job, which is reasonable (IMO) given that you've already got seven years of use out of the truck.

If you decide it's not worth the hassle, just go for a repaint at one of those low-cost shops like Maaco or Earl Scheib.

Here is another Tacoma with the same issue -- it's a 1st gen but only a year from yours so maybe the same paint technique was used. If I'd have seen it alone I'd have said that it too had had something spilled on the roof but perhaps something is occasionally misapplied or improperly mixed at the factory. Or it could be a heat-related issue -- both of your vehicles are dark. Heat is the reason why the "old timey" trucks often came with white cabs..

Unfortunately, even if the there was a paint application problem at the factory once a vehicle is out of warranty they usually no longer consider it their responsibility, unless it falls within the corrosion warranty period and was caused by rust, and only then if the metal is completely perforated.

 

Can anyone suggest a good vendor to buy a OEM Hood scoop insert for my 2005 Tacoma.
Something flew up off the freeway, hit my hood scoop and cracked it.
