I started an answer, but then I remembered how many times that has been one of the security questions for financial online logins.

Not that the OP is phishing... absolutely not... and I've posted my HS before, but a thread that includes a compilation of that data is a "rich" mine for some bots.


So being a bit evasive...

why do people care about that so much. I'll never understand the loyalty to a school after you graduate.

If your university continues turning out quality graduates it reflects well on you. Companies that hire at your university will be more likely to hire you if they have good experiences with other graduates, even if you graduated from there 20 or 30 years ago. If your university has an active alumni association that helps students become successful professionals your stock in the job market goes up.

The first university from which I graduated wasn't especially good at "branding" students; I really don't feel any loyalty to them. The second one had a very active alumni association; my specific major had its own alumni association. We had several events each year where alumni from my major would come back and interact with students. The first time I went to one of these events one alumnus told me, "You are lucky. When I went here we didn't have this. We had no one to teach us how to be professionals." Our alums sponsored job shadowing programs, our annual alumni banquet was a great way to make connections in industry. And when several students showed up in jeans to these events and when they didn't stand when being introduced to a major donor, the alumni association was there to harangue us into shape.

So to answer OP:
~University of Tulsa, Bach of Science in Business Admin, 2003
~Oklahoma State University, Bachelor of Science in Geology, 2008 and currently pursuing a master's degree in geology while working. And I'm proud to be part of the Cowboy Nation. Go Pokes!

High school? Not a big deal. That may reflect badly on you if you went to a notoriously bad school or district, like pretty much any HS in Los Angeles or Oakland, but beyond that, while I was in HS everyone was concerned about the impact their GPA would have on them in 50 years.
Zero.
Achievements in HS help to get accepted into a better college. Once you're out in the real world beyond 25 years old, nobody cares. Your resume, appearance, and reputation tell the story better than your GPA and what HS you went to.

College is another story, and a shingle from one of the top universities in your state is a huge help.

 

That's encouraged by teachers and guidance counselors, but if you have a respectable GPA that's the important part as far as getting into college.

First time I got a C in a geology course (igneous petrology; a weed-out course. 1/3 of the class failed) I was fairly disappointed. I said so to the professor. He told me, "Beth, you're going into petroleum geology. The long term effect on your life of a C in igneous petrology is somewhere between zero and approximately zero. As long as you don't make a habit of getting Cs- which you won't- you need to go to the bar, have a beer, and stop worrying about it."

Advice taken. It's about overall GPA in college.

The thing about the HS GPS and activities is it sets the stage for the attitude.
You won't find many "A" students sitting in San Quentin for armed robbery, and this is why the HS GPS is still a consideration for employers when you are 18-25.

Overall GPA in college? Meh.
Good grades in HS (and community college if you want to save a few bucks on your lower division) help in getting into a good upper division program.
Overall GPA once at the university? Meh. If you're moving on to a masters or PhD, sure... but it's the old joke about "What do you call the guy who graduated last in his Med School class? Doctor"
I've never had an employer request a transcript (I had to dump college 17 units away from my AA in business). My resume simply states "Cypress College, Business Administration Program"

Now, if an employer has 5 applicants from the same school, I can see him looking at the GPA to help decide, but with 5 applicants from 5 different schools... the school is going to be more important.
I'd rather hire someone with a "C" from an Ivy League school than someone with an A from Cal-State.

 

Good points. In my particular field, the master's in the working degree. You can get a job with a bachelor's but you go farther, faster, and get the higher-paying jobs with a master's degree. So GPA in undergrad was fairly important. But grad school seems more about getting it done than about getting it done with high marks. Why worry? I have no intention of pursuing a PhD.

That said, it's been a mix. I've had potential employers request transcripts, some just ask what sort of classes I have taken regardless of whether I completed the degree, and the one I have now I got on the strength of a 10-minute cold call without even submitting a resume.
