Regearing with 33" tires

How many here regeared when they went to either 255 or 285? I was thinking of a 3" OME, new UCA and 4.10 gears...any thoughts?

It seems many members on here are running 285 or 255 with stock gears (3.73). On the flip side, some members are also regeared since going up to 285/255s. check this link out. Just fill in the blanks and it'll tell you what are the prefered gears for a certain size tire

From what I've read, 4.10 gears are not readily made for our trucks. If you're planning on installing lockers down the road, when you get your gears put in that would be a good time to have the lockers installed also. Just my $0.02

 

Not necessary IMO; however, whatever floats your boat. I went to 285s and there is a marginal difference in my fuel economy

 

You are right about it not being necessary, however, regearing eliminates the excessive wear and tear from spinning the larger tires.

4.10 are not made after market. You can only get them used unless you buy them from the $dealer$.

 

nobody makes the 4.10 aftermarket gears for our trucks yet.you will have to add a carrier to do the 4.10.go 4.56 4.10 will not even be a difference and they are 3x the price of 4.56.

 

I went to 4.56 from 3.73 with 285's and the difference is incredible. If you plan on adding any additional weight beyond new tires/wheels I would look at 4.56. If you are just changing your tires/wheels and adding a lift then 4.10 should be fine, but good luck finding them for sale.

Thanks for the feedback. My calcs showed that 4.56 may be a little low and may have a detriment on fuel mileage....who all has run 4.56 and what were your findings?

 

going from 3.73 to 4.10 is not worth the $$$.it is not enough difference to notice.you are only going to be running 200 more rpms with the 4.56 and will have better torque .

Bogg, using that link - my new tires are 5.2% larger in diameter. Since I did not change my wheel size, just larger tires - the RPMs and distance sensor should show stock ratios. So to get an accurate mileage from the odometer, I should add 5.2%?

 

changing your wheel doesn't mean anything.

rpms work from engine load( bigger tire with stock gears makes the engine run in lower rpm. speed and odometer are affected by the bigger diameter. add 5.2% for distance,speed,mpg.

 

Just to let you know, I have 33's on my truck and I have never felt that it needed regeared. I have had multiple lifted trucks before including a chevy with 40" Super Swamper Boggers and I did have to regear to 4.56 with those, but I had 35" tires on before that and didn't regear. That was marginal. But with 33's on my tacoma I have never felt like it needed new gears. I may buy 35" tires next but I will wait to see how it drives before buying new gears.

Those calculators aren't accurate to the real world. Most 285's or 33's actually measure out smaller, like 31.8" or so. I have 4.88 gears and tires that measure out to 37", and it is lower geared than it was with stock 265's and 3.73's. My speedo reads faster than actual ground speed, when it says 109mph I am actually only doing 100. The point is, those calculators are only as accurate as the data you feed them. If you want more grunt go with 4.56-

 

I run 255/85 R16's, stock gearing seems ok with them even offroad. I would only regear if you plan on locking or going to 35's down the road.

As stated above, these are just guide lines. Sort of like lifts. Some get vibes and others don't. Some have regeared and couldn't be happier with the outcome and others stay stock geared. Hence why the gear selector gives a range of gear ratios that could work. Better economy, closer to stock ratios and better performance. From what I gather, take the circumference of the stock tire and the circumference of your new sized tire. The difference in percentage will be the percentage your speedo will be out.

 

Do you have the auto tranny? Another member on here was running 255s and found his tranny to gear search/ghost shift frequently with stock gears. I'm planning on running on 255s in the not so distant future

 

I do have an auto tranny. I think I may go with 4.56 gears and put a locker in the front while I am at it....already have the rear locker.
