How does everyone feel about the filters for the K&N air intake systems? I've heard mixed feelings.

Greater airflow comes at the expense of something. In the K&N's case I believe it is filtration quality. I'm not about to take something that Toyota engineers spent lots of time designing and replace it with essentially wound management cloth soaked in oil.

as far as a cold air intake?
if so you need to oil the filter which can(and usually does) result in throwing off the intake sensor.
i went afe pro dry. i am very happy with it. no ecu problems.

This. I've had problems in the past with K&N and tend to stay away from them. I see them installed all the time on crappy Civics and Integras around here that probably have numerous CEL codes and they DGAF.

Go with a dry filter, oil comes off the filter and gets on the mass air flow sensor, resulting in a check engine light. Could cost more money in the long run, not to mention having to buy recharge kits.

you know i hear poeple complain about the oil getting on the MAF. Its funny I have run K&N oil filters on 2 tacomas with the 3.4L and never had a problem. one has over 307k miles on it and the other has 160k and both go strong everyday. Also K&N has done several test about the oil on the MAF. here is the link http://www.knfilters.com/MAF/massair.htm

I have a K&N drop-in filter in my DCLB '06 Tacoma. You just have to correctly oil the filters. Excessively oiling the filters will cause these problems that a lot of guys on here are talking about (MAF contamination).

A little off topic, but no, those cars don't get CEL codes with K&N filters.

Sorry for straying slightly off topic but if you're saying a improperly oiled K&N filter, no matter how over oiled it is, wont throw codes in a Civic, 1st gen or 8th gen. Well...

FWIW OP, people love aFe ProDry here due to not having to be oiled.

    Good night fellas.

Those cars (up to '06-ish) don't have a MAF to get contaminated in the first place :p

I had a 3.4L w a highflow K&N, had to clean the MAF every 3-6months. It looked like it was coated in dust. I would notice better throttle response after I cleaned it.

As they say, different results for everyone

Pretty sure my '94 HiLux had one (it was OBD-I) and my '95 Suburban absolutely had one, as did my '03 Tundra, Wife's '04 Rav4 and '00 Echo....

I was quoting PerfectTekniq about his comments on "crappy Integras/Civics" getting CEL with K&N filters, not about the Toyota trucks.

And "crappy Integras/Civics" certainly had MAF.
Pretty much every OBD-II vehicle does. OBD-II kicked in mid-90s.

LOL, most of them are equipped with MAP sensors, totally different than MAF sensors. I work on those cars all the time, and I have one as a project street/race car.

I have run K&N for many years on my Z28 Camaro and Tacoma. Never had a MAF issue. Those reports may be due operator error by some folks that over-oil them and/or don't let them dry properly. And one recharge kit lasts damn near forever so I can recommend them. The dry filters look like a good choice, too. Would be a little less work. But cleaning and oiling my K&N every 10k or so is not much of a burden.

I was going to post the same link.

You are actually cleaning the filter too much. The more that you clean them, the filter material degrades (bigger holes for dirt to pass through).

    Excellent link.

And reiterates what many have been saying.

If you are in an offroad race and airflow is the most important factor over engine longevity, K&N is the way to go.

But the stock intake on the 2.7 is more than adequate to flow enough to meet the demands of the 5.7... the normally-aspirated 2.7 and 4.0 don't need any help in the intake department.
CAI systems aren't... they draw air from under the hood, at best they rely on a box that seals to the fender and hood, and then they are drawing air from the same restrictive passage that the stock airbox draws from.
One or two actually reroute the intake to the radiator support and actually do flow better than stock (and see above under airflow requirements).

But run a K&N and send oil samples to Blackstone. Within 2 oil changes your silicon levels will be high enough for their engineer to express concerns about your air filtration system's effectiveness.
This will lead to cylinder wall scuffing and premature oil consumption issues.

K&N don't ever get one!!! Who wants to suck in oil and air I thought the term is cold air intake not a hot air oil intake hahaha.. Just had to post my 2 cents!
