But next time that bitch(animal) is dead.

I don't think that I have ever seen something like that before to when it comes to a truck hitting a tree. I am glad that everyone is okay and that no one was sitting in the seat to where the tree had landed. So it looks like you could be getting a new taco?

Dang! My head hurts just looking at that. Good to hear you made it out ok.

It's hard when you have to react so quickly. It's instinct to try to avoid something. But hard swerving and strong braking at the same time will spin you like a top; all the weight transfers to a front corner. All those 3-letter safety options just aren't all that. Swerving at speed requires you to keep the speed constant, so the weight transfer is to an entire side. In an emergency, most sphincters won't allow that to happen though! The best thing is just straight-on braking. You may not avoid the accident, but given the choice, I'd rather bust up the nose. If you have one of those bad ass metal bumpers, you probably just drive on home.

Glad you are OK. Never seen doors folded up like that. Wonder how an Access Cab would have fared in the same situation, lacking a B-pillar...

Anyone call dibs on the wheels yet? :p

Always better to just hit the animal...Don't slam on your brakes but just apply them and hope for the best.

Holeeeeee crap man. Last year I was in the same situation but didn't swerve. I felt bad for the dog and told the owner I was very sorry. It was either the dog or head on with a church van.

    Glad everyone is alive.

Holy balls! Im glad your ok, but i learned in my early years of driving not to swerve for an animal..unless its a moose or something..glad your ok!

When my dad got his 02 tacoma he let me drive it one day when we were going somewhere..a squirel jumped out and i quickly looked ahead and saw no one was comming so i swerved, he yelled and hollered so i learned right quick to not do that..haha

Ditto on the "Glad you're okay". I'm also a little freaked out as that doesn't look like one of the kids sitting there wouldn't have made it. I thought the side air bags went of on both rollovers and side impacts?

As mentioned above, the "don't swerve for animals" depends on the animal. Moose, cows, mammoths...swerve. My wife is a northerner, and she's seen a moose give someone the finger and walking away from the mangled mess that is now a car.

OP has a 2006. The curtains were introduced in 2008 or 2009.

The appropriate action is obviously "it depends..." If the car handles well and the driver is skilled, sure. I've practiced the "moose test" a few times at 40 mph. It made me put the sway bar back on. :) A stock 4WD Tacoma with the Rugged Fails can be wrestled through the 700-ft slalom at 59 mph.

Keep in mind the car is designed to absorb frontal impacts better than any other angle, because government crash tests have been doing it for the last 30 years. Given a choice between a frontal impact against a moose or a side impact against a tree, I pick the moose.
