Rr Diff Lock

I know this locks the rear differential so the tires spin at the same rate. Do you use this off road/pulling boat out of water/mud etc?

 

I heard you can but with limits on what you tow but getting out of a ditch also depends on how deep you're in. hope this helps

 

a locking diff is mainly for any low speed situation where you're losing traction and the tires are slipping: snow, ice, mud, sand.... You would never use it on dry pavement or while towing (unless you're towing though some mud or whatever). Think of it as and emergency traction measure. Should be a page in the owners manual with Do's and Don'ts/

 

you can not go more than 5mph with it on like charliex said it is for emg only to help free your self if you are stuck

The manual on my 07 Prerunner states not to use the posi over 5 mph. If I'd have know this to begin with, I'd probably have gone with the "sport" package, and had an aftermarket locker installed. I feel JACKED! Anyone change their stock locker out for an aftermarket version?

 

Basically for offroading, prerunners have them too.

Do the grey wire mod for the 4x4 and it'll do cool donuts in 2wd locked just like a prerunner !!! offroad only please hehehe

 

i had a friend that did the gray wire mod on his and he can use the locker in 2wd and 4hi

 

What is this "gray wire mod" and what would it do for my 2wd PreRunner?

no it wouldnt because what what it does is let us with 4wd us the locker in
2wd like you can

 

Well, I got to use the RR Diff Lock today. Was driving home in this bad Northeast storm we've got going, and hit a patch of freezing rain. Car in front of me spun out, and trying to avoid him (successfully) I ended up in the ditch instead. 4LO didn't help, but 4LO and the locked diff gave me enough traction to back up onto the road.

 

what happens if you use the rear locker over 5mph

 

the world stops spinning....lol... i would say the inner workings get over stressed and break... just my theory tho

 

its possible i guess but what iff you gotta get though a bunch of mud or some thing once you get moving i wouldnt think you would want to turn that off until you got out

 

Unless you have modified it, the diff will only lock in at low speed and only in 4Low. In 2High or 4High (or at higher speeds, 5+) it won't lock in, thats why the diff lock light on your dash flashes. The light will be steady once the diff is locked.

 

what about on 2x4 when i used it the other day i got to about 10mph before i shut it off i didnt see any thing flashing

 

the prerunner is different

 

Ok so my question remains what happens if you use the rear locker over 5mph off road of course

 

If you have a prerunner the computer won't engage the locker until you are going below 5mph, if you have a 4x4 you have to be in 4 lo 'and' be going below 5mph for it to lock in. If you press the button while traveling above 5mph the light on the dash will just flash at you nothing happens. The light will go solid when you actually lock the rear not to mention you'll hear it and you will feel the difference. You can operate the truck with the locker engaged above 5mph it just can't make the switch from unlocked to locked going above 5mph. There is a lot of confusion and misinformation about that, many people seem to think you can't use it above 5mph which is not the case at all. Stop, lock, and go as fast as you want. You won't do any damage.

first time i used the thing was the day i got teh truck and im like cool but when i turned it off the it didnt unlock, i had to get out the owners manual to figure out i had to press the button and turn teh truck some

 

i read about the gray wire mod on this site and there is some instuctions for on www.4x4wire.com. basically you just have to ground a wire that tells the 4x4 module that the vehicle is in 4 low even though its in 2 high o 4 high. check it out!!! the only thing is that it say its for the 1st gen tacomas and say nothing about 2nd gen's. does ne1 have any knowledge about the grey wire mod on 2nd gen tacomas????
