Something new I found for 2012 is a chain on the spare tire. My 2011 did not have it. How do you use it what is it for?
    Thanks

No, they still use the cable system for that.

Any pictures of this new chain? Could it be a safety system, in case of cable rot?

chain is to raise and lower the spare tire. I was very surprised that in 2012 they still are using a chain.

my 1993 had a chain, and the block that lifts the chain was also metal so it would rust together. the 2012 has a plastic block so hopefully it works better then the metal block. i still slapped some never-seize on it.

they had a chain, then swapped to a cable, now back to a chain.

figured they would have stayed with the cable which would seem more user friendly. but i guess toyota thinks a chain with a plastic block will work better

great way to lock your spare is to stick a lock on the chain so it can't move. Just make sure to pack it with Grease so it doesn't rust shut.
