    All the stress is located at mid spring, near the ends see only minimal force. You CAN drill close to the end without effecting the spring rating in a measurable way. Ever notice some get thinner towards the end? Drill baby drill! if you want

    Hitch and wiring, aux back-up light, rear strobe lights, radio and underseat sub.
    Drilling on the end of the spring is fine. There are holes in the ends of the other springs. How do you think they got there? Drilling.

    Welding and grinding change the temper. Drilling small holes, using cutting fluid, will not change the temper enough to matter, and will affect a very small area.

    I would not drill the top leaf however, that one does need all it's strength at the end so it can handle the shackle bolt loads. The others are along for the ride.
