Blacked Out Grill

So the chrome piece on the 2012 grill seems to be plastic. I've read in a headlight painting thread that the chrome came off with paint stripper or mineral spirits. Would this be the same for the plastic, chrome grill piece? I want to paint mine black but want to get more info before I start messing around and screw it up.

My plan is to strip it, sand it, prime it and paint it with dupli-color "color match" paint. Thoughts?

i just sanded mine and washed it off with soap and water. after it finished drying...i hit it with a few coats of rustoleum flat black spray paint.

 

If it is chromed plastic, removing the chrome will leave a yellowish colored plastic. I did this on a throw away headlght bezel.

I've read of people sanding and painting. I'd assume that sanding is good enough prep, no real need to remove the chrome chemically. Sanding will get through the chrome to the plastic.

What color are you trying to match?

New colormatch will run 185.00. Bought one for my 2011 and they sent a 2012 by mistake. Still have the part number if you want it.

 

Factory black. I'm 100% confident that I can paint it no problem. I wanted to see what other people have done. Hopefully the dupli-color factory match Toyota black will do it. They match paint codes so I can't see a problem.

Yeah! Shoot me that part number just in case. The chrome isn't killing me. I'm not even positive that I'm going to do it yet. Your truck is one of my favorites on here by the way McDowell. Beautiful...

 

Where'd you get a 2012 colormatch from? I'm very interested.

OP, if you were matching superwhite I would have told you hat duplicolor doesnt have a good match for super white.

 

did you clear coat it at all after or just left it with just the flat black paint?

 

i only did my emblem. i totally spaced out and didnt realize you were trying to black out the entire grill.

 

Sand it with 220 sand paper. Make sure you get everything and do a good job, then go to auto zone or home depot and buy some plastic primer. Then hit it with paint and you'll be fine

 

The same part on your grill that is color matched grey. The out piece I guess.

 

well that was a fail, i tried taking off the plastic chrome grill for a while but come to find out at the end that the bumper is in the way. Im not too familiar with taking off the ARB bumper, i bought the truck with it on

 

you could always plastidip it..?

 

I'm guessing that the stock bumper WOULD NOT need to be removed in order to remove the grill then...

There are only 4 screw/tabs on top to remove the grille - it pulls up.

I don't think that's the same for 1st gens. There's no way I could have pulled it straight up because of the radiator lines
