tailgate

Hey guys, I want to put my 600lb bike in my short bed, do u think the tail gate will hold while loading and unloading the bike?

 

I wouldn't chance it. Plus, considering the TG is so easy to remove, it would be an easy choice for me.

 

The problem is, is that the bike is too long and the rear tire is going to have to be on the tailgate when starpped down. I can build a frame for the bike to take the pressure off the tailgate once the bike is loaded. I'm just curious how the tail gate is gonna hold up while loading and unloading

 

put it sideways? I haven't chanced my 450lb sportbike with it yet but then i have a longbed.

 

How good are you at catching 600lbs of bike?! Why risk it? And driving down the road will only increase the load as you go over bumps, etc. And possibly bending the tailgate too. I don't recall what the max weight is - like 250lbs or something maybe - check the manual for sure.

I'd mount a bolt-down rail that can support the bike alone or get a longer bed.

 

if you ramp it up, put a 2x6 perpendicular with the ramp underneath it to distribute the weight more evenly. im with the other guys though i wouldnt risk it

 

I love my tacoma, but it sucks that we own a truck that can't even handle carrying regular things.

 

Thanks for the imput guys, its feels like a shame to put it on a trailer though when I can minimize room by putting my bike in the bed. But I guess I will just trailer it. You guys are right, much safer to put it on a trailer. Thanks again

What about running a 2x6 or 2x8 front to back in the bed ? Just to distribute the weight of the bike into the bed and off the tailgate ?

 

I have loaded my 900RR into my truck, no issues.. it isn't as heavy, only 430lbs. The rear tire sits right on the crack where the bed ends and the tailgate begins. I just got some handle bar tie downs and didn't have any issues at all.

I will say it is scary shit getting a bike up there, and get at least 2 other people to help. I ended up backing my truck up to the driveway and got the tailgate as low as possible, then just used a ramp that my buddy has for his dirtbike.


I know that older models had a weaker tailgate, I think 09 and up is ok but you may want to double check. I have a 2011.
